Spy programs might up Bush`s support

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Debate over how the Bush administration spies on U.S. citizens in the war on terror may actually help the president`s sagging ratings, a report says.

With his popularity hovering at an all-time low, Time magazine reports in its Monday edition that more people may support Bush`s spy programs than civil libertarians and Capitol Hill critics acknowledge.

In addition to the National Security Agency program of listening in on conversations between domestic and foreign callers without a warrant, revelations this week about new spying efforts have hit the news.

This includes a database that tracks nearly all telephone calls made within the country.

I expect these people will still say Bush is a strong president even after he's impeached and convicted.

5. You know what?
If American people don't know the importance of the Bill of Rights, Constitutional law and the right of personal privacy, one of the chief culprits would have to be Time Magazine.

Over the years, week after week, they have had the opportunity to educate and remind millions of people of what this country's founding principles were and why they are important.

There are other culprits in this, but Time Magazine ought to look in the mirror.

7. They used the lame WaPo poll, which was taken the night
the story came out and only included 500 or so people. If they had used the Newsweek poll, it said the opposite.

"But don't you get it, it's what the American people WANT him to do! Didn't you see the poll?"

Damn that liberal media! :sarcasm:

8. They'll have to spin real real hard to get that pig flying
It's going to take a concerted effort to marginalize the critics, reframe the debate, and distract the public.

If I were in bush's spot, I'd be empowering some really competent people at FEMA right about now to prepare for hurricane season, and do a truly awesome job in disaster response this year (not to mention following through with all the unmet promises from last year). That would make a huge difference in his approval numbers, and lend credibility to his ability to handle other nat'l security tasks.

However, bush has proven that appointments and prominence are almost entirely used as promotional apparatus for his political croneys, so there's little chance of this happening.

9. "Can't get any worse" mindset.
It's totally wrong, but that won't be evident until they post something like the following.

"Despite the Presidents 24% approval rating, studies indicate that the recent news of his killing kittens may actually give the president a boost in the polls, led by pet owners who prefer dogs, rather than cats."

for WH's weary Press Sec to handle, the Deceiver In Chief is at it again. And someone remind me how many more years in office are remaining in this Bataan Death March ? Huh ?

They can listen in to OUR phone calls but can't seem to do jacksquat against OBL & Co. Makes you wonder about that competence thing.

Oh, BTW, how many billions of dollars are we taxpayers paying eavesdropping on Auntie Emm's phone calls to Uncle Festus ?

17. It gives him another chance to talk about his favorite topics
9/11 and terror--not that he needs much prompting.

Anyway, if the spying is illegal and unconstitutional, why should it matter whether people support it or not?

Edited on Mon May-15-06 12:30 AM by Amonester
program "aimed & blasted" at the idiot bu$hbots, maybe it would help increase the number of Americans against the database (I know it wouldn't be fair but that minotity who still supports this wor$t pRe$ident ever will never vote for any Dems): Just "inform" them that if they're supporting these illegal policies their preznit wants to make legal, the next Democratic President will use them too... I predict the number of people against the database would increase faster.

Who could start such special "educational" program targetting these idiots as soon as possible? MoveOn?

(Make sure it's ONLY "aimed" at these retards.)

Edit: I can't type on the new laptop (yet). Sorry.

He's at 29%!

I was outraged at the massive phone bank and not surprised. If anything, the program will hurt his ratings more.

I know in countries like Italy they have widespread wiretapping, but not without any checks and balances! When they heard in Italy about what Bush is doing, they were as disturbed as I am.

22. You must read Daniel Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners"
to understand this phenomenon more fully. Goldhagen, imho, has once and for all exploded the mythos that most Germans "just didn't know" about the mass exterminations taking place. On the contrary, Goldhagen demonstrates that most Germans enthusiastically supported the Nazi's genocidal agenda, even as Russian and Allied troops were crossing both the eastern and western borders of pre-war Germany.

Give the average American a choice between law and order and, of course, like Hitler's willing executioners, they'll take the latter. That's OK, we've already lost the so-called (mis-named, imho) "War on Terror" at Bush's Stalingrad (aka Iraq) and pretty soon we will become just another sorry little footnote to history. And, of course, if we do something really stupid like use nukes on Iran, we run the risk of inviting the rest of the world, including nuclear powers Russia and China, to unite militarily against us.
