nominee's race. I don't think that he's a bad man, he's got an incredible record in the area of civil rights. He's just doesn't have what it takes to be President of the United States.

But honestly, should this come as a surprise? I suppose many people are celebrating the fact that, now that Lieberman isn't in the race, they can go back to lying about his record and calling him a Republican.

something like "He took fairly conservation positions, in other years that might have worked."
Thank God, I was afraid if some fluke resulted in his being the nominee I'd have to get stinkin' pukin' drunk before I voted in November.

John F. Kennedy would have been invited out of the party. There's few differences in world outlook between Senator Lieberman and John Kennedy.

39. The obvious difference between the two.... |
|
... is forty years which is about four lifetimes in this country - and a completely different world, culture, and body politic.
Your analogy fails completely in that regard and in the basic realization that President Kennedy was a progressive (moving matters and issues forward; for the better) whereas Senator Liberman is mired, pitifully, in the status quo on virtually all the key progressive issues of this time and this place.

His voting record is smeared regularly here on DU. Sure, he didn't vote like I would like all the time, but he stood for progressive values more times that not. He deserves better than this thread.

His candidacy has done nothing to promote democratic candidates. He has hurt them. I'm glad he's done. I think his basic values are fine, but the way he enables Rebubs just hurts us. I'm glad he's in the Senate, but he is a terrible Pres. or VP candidate.

41. I do not have a problem with JL as a senator |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-03-04 09:16 PM by D G
-- of course, I'm not one of his constituents - if I was, I probably would have a HUGE problem with him.
But as a Democratic presidential candidate, I think a legitimate case can be made for him hurting other Democrats. His self-representation as a "mainstream" Democrat and denouncement of the other candidates as too darn... well, representative of everything the Democratic Party stands for ;) -- with friends like this, who needs Republicans?
Good luck to Joe and his family, but I'm glad to see him drop out - and I wouldn't be surprised if Fox hired him as an "expert" for the rest of the Dem primaries :eyes:

My partner and I are both loyal Democrats who have defended Lieberman in the past but his behavior has gone beyond all bounds lately. We both have been eagerly awaiting this moment. I'm sorry, if in our exuberance, we offended.
He is a good man. He's just the WRONG man to lead our country as a Democrat.
