I think his first thing on his list should have been penalties for the employers. I think he listed it as number three. If you want to stop a problem you stamp out the root. He is blowing smoke. He wants it both ways. He wants to exploit mexicans for corporate profit via the guest worker program and pander to his base with the national guard. Not one mention of better wages. I would love to know what the current system is for an employer to verify a workers status. Bush wants to put the blame on forged documents, but isn't there a social security database where all this info could be for cross checked? I am very skeptical of this ID business.

4. I didn't watch - was it just the usual "hot air" |
|
or did he manage to actually say something?
Everyone knew about the 5,000 members of the guard early in the day - it was all over the news.
Did he ever actually say anything else.
I would have watched but I just can't stand to look at the guy.

8. Wow, DU is pretty pathetic on this. |
|
I saw a couple of threads devoted to whatever gaffe Bush made before the speech, but the posters couldn't be bothered to actually address what he said.
I thought it was a decent, middle of the road approach to the issue. Increase border security, have a guest worker program, have a process for citizenship for some of those here the longest. Apparently, most of the country liked the speech, too, if the initial polls are to be believed.
That said, I have plenty to quibble about with the Bush proposal. Tamperproof ID cards? What kind of guest worker program? What kind of employer sanctions? What immigration levels?
My take is that Bush has probably served himself well with middle of the roaders with this speech. He throws a bone to his racist base with the border security stuff, but leaves a way for these workers to continue to work here.

I would add that the 6000 guard troops to the border is a "bone" with no marrow, since it won't really change a hell of a lot.

11. it was nothing more than smoke and mirrors |

to distract America from their crimes. I heard the analysis of it from several sources (as I said, I didn't watch the speech itself) and, quite frankly, I don't believe a word they have to say, about anything, ever. It may as well be another Mars proposal. Our country is being run by a cabal. To even suggest BushCo gives a damn about a reasonable solution to anything is assuming they give a crap what anybody thinks, and I think they've demonstrated that they don't.

14. They're interested in a reasonable solution |

in fact, most are saying this was "middle of the road".
Think about it, he's DESPERATE to raise his numbers. He cares very much about what EVERYBODY thinks at this point. Just....not about the war on terra.

9. Why did he allow budget cuts to the |

Border Patrol last year ? I think it cut something like 10,000 jobs?
It boggles my mind that his speech wouldn't address "that mistake"

12. Why would i bother to comment on the content? |
|
*?, He can't be trusted to follow up on or impliment anything he says.
If i nail him on a something he said, his people will deny he said it.
If i present video evidence, his people will say he "That's not what he means"
If i bring in facts from the real world I will be on their bias even if it is Encyclopedia Britanica or the Weather Channel.
If i say something that is a matter of opinion I will be called wrong.
If i catch * in a lie and have the facts to back it up his people will call it opinion.
Why bother when every Ma and Pa Kettle can see he is lying?
