Lieberman wins nomination, but Lamont forces primary
Full article

HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman was nominated for a fourth term by state Democrats Friday night, but his anti-war challenger garnered enough delegates to force a primary in August.

Backers of Ned Lamont, a Greenwich businessman who has sharply criticized the moderate senator for his support of the war in Iraq, shouted with delight after learning their candidate will be the first to challenge Lieberman to a primary.

Lieberman won 1,004 of the 1,509 delegates, while Lamont won 505. Lamont captured 33 percent of the delegates, well more than the 15 percent he needed to force the primary.

--snip--

"I think we're moving into friendlier territory," Smith said of the Aug. 8 primary. "There are 600,000 Democrats who are going to be heard from before this is over."

Supports the war, sucks up to the pResident- what more could you ask for in a Democrat, eh?

PB

1. Would be great to see all that Joementum hit a brick wall in August.
But even so, I'm sure Joe will still have a few friends in high places.

5. That was probably the first time Bush kissed Lieberman in public
Who knows how many times he has kissed him in private?

4. Question for Connecticut DUers: Re the primary
Is this an open primary? If so, can enough Repugs register as Dems right before the primary to sway it? This would be my prediction, unfortunately, given Joementums' penchance for the Bush* party lines.

6. Here in WA State...
In primary, Democrats can only vote for Democrat candidates, Republicans only vote for Republican candidates and so on and so on. It's in General election, you can cross over and vote for anyone you'll like.

12. The primary is CLOSED
and you had to register, I believe, as a Dem by early may in order to be eligible.

14. Good that answers it, then...
SOme states literally allow one to register right before a primary, then re-register for the opposition party's primary. Wyoming comes to mind, or at least they used to.

15. A Republican can change registration at the time of primary
Here is an example:

Shays says he intends to vote for Lieberman

February 28, 2006

STAMFORD, Conn. --Republican U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays said Tuesday that he plans to vote this year for Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman and encouraged other GOP officials to endorse the three-term senator.

Shays, R-4th District, made the remarks in an interview with the editorial board of The Advocate of Stamford, which did not immediately report his comments. The Hartford Courant reported Shay's support of Lieberman on its Web site Tuesday night. Both papers are owned by Tribune Co.

Republicans have been gauging support for the idea of a cross-endorsement of Lieberman among several GOP candidates, including Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Connecticut U.S. Reps. Rob Simmons and Nancy L. Johnson.

<snip>

Lieberman did accept an endorsement from Republicans while seeking his second term in 1994.

23. that sounds like the general election
Shays may vote for Lieberman if he gets to the general. He CANNOT vote in the Democratic primary as he would have had to change registration to Dem a month ago.

7. Since when is Lieberman a "moderate" unless you speak of GOP?
Backers of Ned Lamont, a Greenwich businessman who has sharply criticized the moderate senator for his support of the war in Iraq

Lamont is the one that is a moderate, but one that is against the war, while Lieberman is a spiritual soulmate to Paul Wolfowitz.

17. Lieberman is a moderate to liberal Democrat
The only place where he would ever be described as a conservative is among leftist idiots.

19. You haven't heard his latest pronouncement on rape victims
in which he sided with the rightwing in saying that health care providers can use faith as a pretext for denying a rape victim medical care to prevent conception. I believe that puts Lieberman on the same level as Susan Collins and Arlan Specter, pukes all.

29. Still doesn't make him a conservative
I think he's wrong about that, by the way. I'm pretty sure that the only hospitals where you could conceivably refuse to perform an abortion on "moral" or "religious" grounds would be Catholic hospitals or other "religious" hospitals where abortion is considered wrong by the tenets of their faith.

He's also wrong when he says they can always find another hospital. That's probably true in Connecticut, not so much in many other states. And if transportation is a problem that can be a big obstacle too.

Funny there's no attempt from the far left to oust the GOP Governor of Connecticut...but then it's Democrats that they hate.

at the next day's proceeding for nominating the gubernatorial candidate. A former Lamont staffer gave a speech urging Lamont delegates to vote for DeStefano.

8. Holy Crap!!
Lieberman's people were saying Lamont would get that amount in order to set unrealistically high expectations and then to say that Lamont fell short. Well, Ned did it for REAL!! :woohoo: Oh my gawd, this sends a great message. I am so impressed!

Take that, Traitor Joe!

Here's to you, Ned!: :bounce:  :toast:

13. Now just hold on a second, here .........
Am I still haffa cuppa short or is this article trying to have it both ways?

On the one hand they say Holy Joe got the nomination.

On the other hand (which to me seems more correct) they say Holy Joe has to win a primary.

Just which is it?

16. The primary is in August, so Traitor Joe and Ned will face off then.
I think this was like a pre-primary, to see who had enough support to garner a place on the primary ballot. Ned has enough support. :bounce:

21. Joe got the state party endorsement but they use the term nomination.
By getting more than 15% of the endorsement vote, Lamont has forced him into a primary, and Holy Joe won't be the party's candidate unless he wins that primary. Hope he doesn't..

18. That's great!
This should send a message to those Republican Lite, pro-war types that the majority of people were against the war and are against the war now.

Best of luck to Ned Lamont in the August primary.
