Brian Bilbray, "Another Duke Cunningham Clone in Congress?"

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Dear ()

On June 6, voters in San Diego County, California will be electing my next colleague in Congress in the most important race preceding this November's Mid-term election.

This is a special-election run-off to fill the seat vacated by convicted felon and disgraced former Republican Representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham. And, right now, Democrat Francine Busby is running hard against Republican Brian Bilbray, a former Congressman-turned-lobbyist, who has received thousands of dollars worth of campaign contributions from corrupt Republican leaders such as Tom DeLay and Duke Cunningham.

Francine is the type of Democratic colleague I need by my side in Washington. She is a dynamic public official and innovative community leader, who has built an impressive record of public service. And Francine needs our help:

The recent polls indicate that Francine is gaining strength down the stretch, as she is slightly ahead in an extremely close race.

With momentum clearly on Busby's side and on the side of Democrats fighting against the Republican culture of corruption, this is a great opportunity for all of us to send a clear message that we have had enough of the Republican scandals in Washington. A Francine victory in this traditional Republican leaning district will be a great victory for the Democrat while sending shockwaves through the weak and corrupt Republican establishment in Washington DC.

How worried are the Washington Republicans about this race? Well according to an AP report Vice President Dick Cheney himself is headlining a $2,100-per-person luncheon in San Diego for Francine's opponent today (Tuesday, May 23rd).

We need to send Dick Cheney a message that we have had enough of his party's big dollar culture of corruption. Please send a contribution to Busby's campaign today.

Your contributions of $20 (or more) to her campaign will make it possible for her to reach voters through the mail, radio, television and door to door in these crucial, final days of the campaign.

Francine will not be another Cunningham clone coming out of California.

While she has been busy listening to people in her community as member of her local school district board, her opponent Brian Bilbray been busy immersing himself in the Republican culture of corruption within the beltway. He took in thousands of dollars of campaign contributions from characters such as Tom DeLay and Duke Cunningham. In fact from 1999 to 2000, Bilbray received $9,999 from Tom DeLay's political action committee, and also took in $7,000 from Duke Cunningham from1994 to 2000.

Moreover, Bilbray also took money from a defense contractor tied to Duke Cunningham's federal criminal case, who has also been implicated in an ever widening corruption scandal involving limousine services and prostitutes in expensive hotels in Washington DC.

Clearly Francine represents a clean alternative to Bilbray-Cunningham-DeLay axis of Republican corruption that has stained DC.

And with just two weeks left, now is the time to support a Democratic candidate whose victory would send the Republican Party a message well in advance of the November midterm elections. Together, we can make a stand against the right-wing extremism and ethical problems that cloud Washington by sending Francine Busby to Congress on June 6th!

I need more colleagues like Francine in Congress and hope she can count on your support.

Thank you again for all you do to protect our Democracy.

In Solidarity,

Rep. Louise M. Slaughter

SAN DIEGO -- It is now more than just mudslinging in the race for the 50th Congressional District.

Wednesday, the Democratic Party called for an investigation into allegations of perjury and voter fraud against Republican candidate Brian Bilbray.

Democrats said the proof is in property records from three homes and Bilbray’s declaration of candidacy.

These are serious allegations against a man who has run a campaign saying San Diego is and always will be his home.

The ad states San Diego is the home where Republican congressional candidate Bilbray said he lives.

“I live in Carlsbad, taking care of my mother,” Bilbray said.

He said he has lived in the Carlsbad house since March 2005.
