CNN Cites White Supremacist Group As Source

Today on "Lou Dobbs Tonight," CNN ran a graphic sourced to the Council of Conservative Citizens, a group deemed to have a "white supremacy" ideology according to the Anti-Defamation League.

During a piece about illegal immigrants in Utah, reporter Casey Wian said, "Utah is also part of the territory some militant Latino activists refer to as Aztlan, the portion of the southwest United States they claim rightfully belongs to Mexico."

As you can see in the right hand corner, the source of the map is the Council of Conservative Citizens. (Go to second Link for screenshot of map Dobbs showed from CCC)

For more background on the CCC check out this from the Anti-Defamation League:
http://www.adl.org/learn/ext_us/CCCitizens.asp?xpicked=3&item=12

CNN should apologize to its viewers and reprimand those involved in the report.

1. Just to be clear, we're not surprised Dobbs is citing them, right?
Just checking.

2. Lou Dobbs is losing it
Every day he comes across more unhinged, more obsessed with the "brown people" that are "invading" our country. His show has morphed from economics to a one hour daily xenophobic rant against Mexicans.

4. Whoa! Even I know about the CCC & I'm nobody! Dobbs should know better.
You lay down w/dogs, you wake up w/fleas.

Then again, a little unfiltered racist source data creeping into his show doesn't surprise me.

I like his concern for outsourcing of American jobs, etc., but he tends to wipe out any goodwill with the race baiting crap.

Will be interesting to see how he handles this fuck up.

5. Hmm. Vincent Fox is in Utah for a 2-day visit
His first ever visit to the state.

Utah prepares for Vicente Fox visit

Utah gets a rare presidential visit Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact this will be the first visit ever by a sitting president - of Mexico.

Vicente Fox will arrive Tuesday over the noon hour for a full day of events, interacting with Utahns, especially those who came here from Mexico. "Its exciting that he would come to Utah," says Mexican immigrant Joel Guerrero, echoing the reaction of many of Utah's estimated 200,000 Mexican and Latino residents.

Guerrero offers translation services and help for Spanish speakers trying to fill out American forms like tax returns and visa applications. Guerrero has been invited to a Tuesday lunch with President Fox. He says if he could, he'd ask the president about President Bush's use of military forces on the border with Mexico. "The U.S. is sending the National Guard to the border. I'm just curious how Mexico is going to react to that."

"Its obviously the American dream at its best," says Jorge Fierro, another successful Mexican immigrant. Fierro is describing Fox's visit to his Rico Foods manufacturing plant Wednesday morning, where Fierro's staff will serve breakfast to him.

8. WSWS Cited on DU
A post above cites the World Socialist Web Site as a 'news' source.

Since Dobbs was trying to make a point about the extremist, radical Aztlan movement, perhaps it was ironic to use a graphic from another extremist organization.

Anyway, people use all kinds of sources to make a point ... just like the DUer that links to a World Socialist site. But I don't think we want all DUer's painted with the 'socialist' brush, do we?

Much ado about nothing here.

Beside, Dobbs is 90 percent right on the illegal immigration issue.

9. Sure, why not?
The US is the only country in the world that thinks "Socialism" is somehow inherently bad. Talk to the Labor Party of Britian, a member of Socialist International, or the Socialist party of Spain, etc.

This is totally different than citing the CCC, which used to be the White Citizen's Council, as a source for ANYTHING. Fucking HATE groups should be ignored entirely. Is he going to cite stormfront too?

Ironic yes, but not intentionally so- I think you give Dobbs & CNN WAY too much credit. LOL.

I guess that makes sense, though- since you seem to agree with his xenophobic views.

14. Xenophobic?
Hey,. I'm not the one encouraging Mexicans to come up here and clean our toilets and cut-up our chickens because 'we' are too good and superior now to do those jobs ourselves.

I'm in favor of all the illegal immigrant Mexicans going back home to vote for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and reclaim their own country from the transnational corporatists that have hijacked their economy and culture.

16. What?
Dobbs has been against NAFTA, outsourcing, WTO, etc.

We have "conservatives" in this country for the first time supporting notions like a "livable wage", because they recognize how important it is to have a middle class in this country.

Progressives need to embrace this shift in position.

It is in everyone's best interests if we strengthen the working middle class here -- and help create a genuine non-exploited, working class in Mexico.

No one benefits when the impoverished from Mexico and other Latin American nations are sent north to solve the corruption and elitist greed problems of other country's governments. Nor are we helped when surplus, off-the-books labor drives down wages here.

12. C'mon. As much as I like DU, we are basically a slightly leftist
echo chamber which on its best day can't agree on anything more than "Bush, Bad". We have no real control over what some of our posters use for sources.

Dobbs is C fuckin NN. HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

For anyone to compare the two is, at its heart, disingenuous.

And in all his rants against the evil brown people does he ever talk about stopping the problem, if it is one, at it's source -- the NAFTA, and other so-called free trade agreements which have devastated the home economies of where the immigrants are from, combined with the union-busting corporations which encourage the importation of scab labor.

He is 90% WRONG on this issue, blinded by unreasoning fear or greed for ratings -- I don't know, and couldn't care, which.

20. Traditional conservative Republicans
Conserving the power for the wealthy by convincing the upper class that they'll be protected from the lower classes and races. Sometimes the working class gets confused and think they have more in common with the upper class than the poor minority and start to worship idiots like Lou Dobbs.

26. What is so Evil about a "Socialist Site"? What is Evil about Socialism?
How has Socialism ever hurt you personally? Are you a Multi-National Pharmaceutical Company Executive? Or are you the CEO of Chevron?

What is evil about Single Payer Health Care?

What about a Free Education for all citizens, not just the wealthy class?

What is evil about good quality public schools and energy efficient, good quality transportation?

What is evil about Unions, equal pay for equal work?

What is evil about a living wage?

I could go on and on, but most of these are actual Democratic Party Platform issues... what conservatives like to call, Socialism.

And they would be right that these are Socialist prinicples, but what is so evil about them?

31. Exactly. I thought we WERE socialists.
Social security, universal healthcare, subsidies for education -- these are all socialist programs. That is the core difference between liberals and conservatives.

27. More Like 100%
Dobbs is right on target about immigration, regardless of the source he quoted. If this is the only argument people can make against him, then it just goes to show how little argument open borders advocates have against Dobbs or others that oppose illegal immigration.

Edited on Thu May-25-06 12:27 AM by radio4progressives
Just because Dobbs does a great job of Bush Bashing every single day of the week doesn't mean he's "right on".

The only reason why Dobbs hammers the shit out of Bush on a daily basis is because Bush doesn't live up to the standard bearer of Racists who have made up the modern day Republican party - people like Sensenbrenner, Sessions, Frist, and so many others in both houses and what THEIR issue on the "illegal immigration" is all about (for them).

Bush Bashing shouldnt' be our standard bearer for honest reporting and honest socio-economic and political analysis.

Unfortunately, that point is missed by a number of so called "liberals".
