Wingnut rebuttal contest
A neighbor of mine forwards me a lot of those B.S. e-mails that circle the 'net.

This one is especially boneheaded and begs for a witty comeback to its supposedly witty comeback.

So please delight us with your wit, and for the best entries I'll further your fame by acknowledging you on my hopelessly obscure liberal blog.

Have fun...

Subject: Oh Hell Yeah !

Love This Comeback

One of my sons serves in the military. He is still stateside, here in
California. He called me yesterday to let me know how warm and welcoming
people were to him, and his troops, everywhere he goes, telling me how
people shake their hands, and thank them for being willing to serve, and
fight, for not only our own freedoms but so that others may have them
also.

But he also told me about an incident in the grocery store he stopped
at yesterday, on his way home from the base. He said that ahead of
several people in front of him stood a woman dressed in a burkha.

He said when she got to the cashier she loudly remarked about the U.S.
flag lapel pin the cashier wore on her smock. The cashier reached up and
touched the pin, and said proudly," Yes, I always wear it and probably
always will."

The woman in the burkha then asked the cashier when she was going to
stop bombing her countrymen, explaining that she was Iraqi.
A gentleman standing behind my son stepped forward, putting his arm
around my son's shoulders, and nodding towards my son, said in a calm
and gentle voice to the Iraqi woman:

"Lady, hundreds of thousands of men and women like this young man have
fought and died so that YOU could stand here, in MY country and accuse a
check-out cashier of bombing YOUR countrymen. It is my belief that had
you been this outspoken in YOUR own country, we wouldn't need to be
there today. But, hey, if you have now learned how to speak out so
loudly and clearly, I'll gladly buy you a ticket and pay your way back
to Iraq so you can straighten out the mess in YOUR country that you are
obviously here in MY country to avoid."

Everyone within hearing distance cheered!

3. IMHO, it doesn't matter whether it's a true anecdote or a fable
It's the psychotic message, gleefully forwarded by wingnuts, that we should send the A-rabs back to Iraq to fix the mess we made there, that I think demands a pithy rebuttal.

FWIW, I presume that it's a piece of fiction....

6. So do I ...
and snopes lays out the facts as to why it's questionable - no person names, store names, the woman dressed like that (a devout Muslim) without a male escort.

Sometimes the facts are the only bitchslap one needs.

8. Again, IMHO, the truth of the tale isn't the issue
I hadn't considered the possibility that anyone thought it really happened, and I can't see how that matters.

It totally sounds like a bogus story, though snopes can't officially debunk it, because they don't have records of every grocery-store conversation in California -- you'd have to be with the NSA to have that.

What's disturbing isn't the incredibly remote possibility that this conversation took place, but that some of our countrymen find it inspiring.

What snopes doesn't do is express the sick irony of this yarn, where a US soldier tells an Arab woman in California that it's her job to fix the problems that our military action in Iraq has caused.

After all that's gone on, it's mind-boggling that anyone could say "Hell, yeah!" to this fable and avidly forward it around.

... I can't see how it *wouldn't* strike one that way, but I'm wondering if any of my quick-witted brethren and sisteren here have a more quick-witted way of saying it.

2. You can't bomb people into becoming democratic.
She might never have left her country had it not been for the bombs. I saw this bumper sticker on a freeper truck yesterday, "I'd rather go hunting with Cheney than go for a ride with Ted Kennedy"
Ouch!

12. Here's my rebuttal
I was in Hudson's Grocery Store in Harrison Arkansas the other day and saw a soldier in uniform in line. I went up and shook his hand, thanking him for his service. This past weekend, at a local festival, I went up to the local Guard tent where family members had a quilt drawing and handed them the money from my pocket.

And I said, "I support our troops. I think they have been shamefully treated by the Bush Government, and am working as hard as I can to make sure they all come home-NOW."

This is what I do in between calling my conman and signing petitions and going to rallies. I am Muslim, but I don't wear a burkha-for a couple of reasons. One is that I interpret "dressing modestly" from the Qur'an to mean to blend in with others. And I don't tell anyone around here I'm Muslim because the "patriotic Americans" with W stickers on their cars (the ones who walk by the Guard tent and don't donate a dime to their cause)have threatened the lives of Muslims in this area.

Now my question to the writer of the email is this-how are YOU supporting the troops? Do you give money to Guard units? Or, since you believe in this war, have you enlisted? Are you working to make sure veterans have proper health care? Finally, are you showing tolerance and respect for those of other faiths?

18. Most of them, probably
Unless they were actually expected to participate in the fighting.

Anyway, it be more logical than bombing Iraq to get back at Osama Bin-Laden.

Perhaps "China attacking Trinidad to get rid of Bill Clinton" would be comparable?

17. the chickenhawk should've bought himself a ticket to Iraq to try to fix
the mess he supported, avoided fighting in, and is too cowardly to admit to. And you can bet that soldier's uniform needed a good wash after that rank old arm was draped over it.

SUPPORT THE WAR? PLEASE GO FIGHT IT.

19. The addendum to the story.
The woman with the burqa turns to the smart-mouth republican and says, "Sir, while you have been sitting in your 4,000 square-foot home, eating Kobe beef and smoking Cuban cigars, I have been mourning the loss of my son, who went to Iraq to check on relatives. He had just left a store inquiring about one of his uncles when he was killed by stray gunfire coming from a firefight between Americans and suspected insurgents.

I have lived in this country 40 years. My sons and daughter were born here. I was always proud to think of myself as an American, but now people like you sir, have turned this into a country that none of us should be proud of.
