Broder says he's "getting killed" with negative mail
Broder -- "getting killed" with negative email over column on Clintons' marriage -- claims to "wish" it were "nobody's else's business"

Summary: On a Washington Post Radio program, Washington Post columnist David Broder defended his public speculation on the state of the marriage of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and former President Bill Clinton. Asked whether his May 25 column "generate more positive email or more negative email," Broder replied, "I'm getting killed." He explained that "the reaction was highly negative" and that readers had told him Sen. Clinton's marriage "is ... nobody else's business." But he said he disagreed.

If it IS anyone else's business, then he better get busy. Where's Sen Coleman's wife? Has Don Sherwood patched things up with the Mrs? Do Liddy and Bob have much "alone time"?........wait a minute! God, I hope he doesn't get busy

3. Is McCain's wife *really* sober
still? How do you know, Wash Post? I think you need a team of investigative reporters to cover this important cultural phenomenon.

5. And Laura and George...is it true that without the mood-meds,
there would be no marriage at all? Laura hates being in Washington and never wanted him to run. Her husband went ahead anyway, how often must they scream at one another even when doped-up?

Has DeLay's legal troubles caused more friction within his marriage? Do his "hot-tubbing" days still bother her? Does it create fights and bedtime woe? I bet she contemplates divorce. :eyes:

12. Hehe...well in that case, what was up with Mrs Cheney's makeover
a couple years ago that made her look like Hilary Clinton. Did a "smitten" Mr. Cheney request it?

I could go on, but I grow weary and the pay is low. :-)

14. Broder blows dead dogs
Or so I've been told. I mean, I'm just speculating and it's really none of my business. But I thought I'd put it out there, anyhow.

16. Well don't sugar-coat it for us, 5thGenDem. How do you REALLY feel
about Broder?

_____

I've always thought he was a bit of a dull writer. Not incompetent exactly, just flat-spirited. And a week or two before what was becoming an obvious Clinton victory over Bush, I watched an interview with Broder and Bill Saffire, the former conservative NYTimes columnist.

Broder was gloating and taunting Saffire over the pending Dem victory. I voted strong Dem in that one, too, but I thought it was bad form.

Some people tell me he was very gracious all his life to the late Mary McGrory, who really WAS a terrific political columnist. So if that's true, it mitigates the negative stuff some.

19. Aw, I could be more generous of spirit (and less vulgar, too)
Broder isn't the worse political writer out there by a long shot. But, having been a writer since tenth grade (circa 1972), I recognize a column pulled out of one's ass when I see it. Broder can and should have done better and, more, it seems that his recognition of the hate mail points out that he knows that now.
My comment had to do with both Broder's laziness on this particular column (I wrote the opinion columns on my college paper and caught plenty of heat when I was similarly lazy, though I am about half as talented as Broder) and because, frankly, I am half in the bag tonight.
I should hold myself to a higher standard in my commentary. I don't allude to dead dogs or oral sex very often -- but, like I said, laziness will trip up a writer faster than just about anything else. Still, let Broder write about Bill or Hillary's political deficiencies (which, IMHO, are plentiful -- God love 'em) and leave the personal stuff the hell alone.
That's my last "blows dead dogs" comment for a while -- I swear to God. I'll pick the caliber of the writing up myself, buzzed or not.

20. But you aren't a lazy writer, looks like to me, and not a lazy reader
either.

Let me lift that word up from your reply -- "lazy."

That's what I should have said about Broder and didn't.

Bull's eye. Thank you.

15. the media decides if it is nobody's business
If they write and talk about it, it becomes the public's business, whether it truly is or not.

the media know this. very surprising is broder's take.

17. There's a poll on Wonkette about which "big name '08 contender Democrat
is getting the most tail"?

Out in front by a comfortable margin are Al and Tipper. A respectable second place are the newlywed Kucinichs.

21. At least with these credentials, if his current gig doesn't work out...
he can always get a job penning similar trash for National Inquirer, Star Magazine or The Mirror. Rupert Murdoch still wallows in the tabloid business, they should get along fine, but Broder may have to learn to write with a British accent.
