UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United Nations' No. 2 official accused the U.S. government of keeping Middle America in the dark about the world body's good works, a rare direct criticism that drew an angry response Wednesday from Ambassador John Bolton.

Bolton called Tuesday's speech by Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown a ``very, very grave mistake'' that could undermine Secretary-General Kofi Annan's efforts to push through an ambitious agenda at the world body.

``I spoke to the secretary-general this morning, I said 'I've known you since 1989 and I'm telling you this is the worst mistake by a senior U.N. official that I have seen in that entire time,''' Bolton told reporters on Wednesday.

(snip)

``Even though the target of the speech was the United States, the victim, I fear, will be the United Nations,'' the ambassador said.

Holy crap. Are we going to kick the U.N. out of NYC?

5. Problem is...
...without the US, the UN pretty much collapses. So no, they can never kick us out.

Without the US, the UN has virtually no military power or global reach available to it. Without that type of military component, the UN can't back up any of its resolutions. Without an ability to back up its resolutions, the UN becomes a joke - a toothless tiger.

So no, the UN will never, ever kick the US out. Anyone hoping for such a thing is effectively hoping to see the end of the UN altogether.

8. The UN really needs to get out of NY on its own accord
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 10:37 PM by depakid
The international community needs to face up to the facts- The US has become a rogue state that refuses to sign or to honor international treaties, and it undercuts UN efforts (often through recourse to irrational fundamentalism) every chance it gets.

The sooner the UN and the rest of the world figures out that it's only going to get worse in the next decade- as wasteful Americans fight for diminishing energy resources and struggle with unsustainable debt (that they will eventually default on) the better for all of us.

13. I now realize why John Bolton was such a controversial selection
for ambassador to the UN. What a pompous, embarrassment he is. Is he so full of it that he cant accept any criticism at all? The Bush administration never hesitates to use the UN as an excuse for invading Iraq, but if the UN ever dares to say anything contrary to the beliefs of the US they are then referred to as a spent force.
