"Some Latinos Go Own Way on Illegal Immigration"
I found this article in today's Tribune interesting...

Some Latinos go own way on illegal immigration

By Ana Beatriz Cholo
Tribune staff reporter
Published June 17, 2006

"As National Guard troops patrol the U.S.-Mexico border to try to stop people from entering this country illegally, a minority of Latinos want to make a point: Don't assume Hispanics share the same opinion on illegal immigration.

These Latinos say undocumented immigrants should not be eligible for government services and are hurting the economy by driving down wages.

Tensions have simmered over the years between those who came here legally and those who didn't, and between U.S.-born Latinos who date back generations and the undocumented newcomers.

A survey last year by the Pew Hispanic Center underscores the divergence of opinions among Latinos.

While proud of their heritage, some Latinos say they are just as proud of the American flag and denounce the idea of singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, as was done during the height of this spring's protests in support of amnesty for undocumented immigrants."

I wonder if these folks know that, if they posted on DU, they'd be called "racists".

1. This is VERY telling when American Latinos say............
....illegal aliens help drive down wages and shouldn't be eligible for government services. Maybe those of us who are constantly flamed for our stance of illegal aliens aren't so wrong after all.

Yes, I agree American Latinos who don't like illegal aliens would indeed be unmercifully flamed at DU, called racist, possibly traitors, and who knows what else. You'd be surprised what my American born Latino husband calls illegal aliens from Mexico.

Let's not get my husband start on this issue because he's worse about it than I am.:hide:

3. Yea, go figure!! LOL My husband is "American Latino" as he will.......
....have you know and he's none to thrilled with those d.... M...... flooding up here.

Oh and my husband absolutely hates it when someone calls him Mexican American or Latino American. He will in no uncertain terms tell the person I am not a Mexican American or Latino American. I am an American Latino, I'm American first." If that point needed to be proved then he proved it by enlisting in the Army:patriot: and did two tours in Viet Nam.

Needless to say, my husband is very opinionated!!

5. We call them "border brothers"
Actually my MexAm in laws are pretty middle of the road, on the subject. in general, they tend to be slightly more liberal on immigration legality issues, but middle of the road. They identify as Mexican Americans, and have felt much of the discrimination over the last 50 years, so they have seen a lot of this shit before.
