AP: Flag-Burning Amendment Unites Sen. Leaders (against it)
Flag-Burning Amendment Unites Sen. Leaders

The Associated Press
Sunday, June 25, 2006; 12:35 PM

WASHINGTON -- Senate leaders in both parties said Sunday there is no need
for a constitutional amendment to ban flag-burning, which the Senate plans
to debate this week.

Protecting the First Amendment's right to free speech takes precedent,
agreed Sens. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., each their party's
second-ranking Senate leader. Both said they would oppose the flag-burning
amendment.

"I think the First Amendment has served us well for over 200 years. I don't think
it needs to be altered," McConnell said on ABC's "This Week."

"It is within one vote of passage. And I think that's unfortunate," Durbin said.
"There are scarcely any instances across America where people are burning the
flag. And yet, now we want to set aside the important business of the Senate,
health care and energy policy and education and debate for an entire week
this concept of amending our Bill of Rights."

1. Good for them! I wish Frist and Reid would unite against it.
It's absolutely pathetic that this divisive piece of garbage is within one vote of passage. I guess if the far right doesn't like part of the Bill of Rights, they will just amend it out of existence. The news of the Flag Amendment being within one vote of passage is one of the main reasons that I increased my monthly ACLU donation earlier this week. I want to do whatever it takes to stop the right wing from taking away the freedom of Americans.

2. Senators like Cornyn, Sessions, Chambliss, et al
Must duly demagogue dastardly destroyers of the standard of liberty, the constitution, nay, Mom and apple pie. I can hardly wait to see Cornyn the Empty Skulled weigh in on this vitally important matter, it promises to be wonderful theater, John tossing his immaculately coiffed white mane, his lower lip trembling with feigned outrage or is it contempt for would be flag burners, they're mighty lucky, that Big John Cornyn can't get his hands on their anti-American terrorist comforting asses!

John is so Super Patriotic that nothing stands between him and defending his Country, er, defending his flag. Why, that Big John Cornyn is a hell of a man! And remember he is available to serve as YOUR pResident as soon as 2008!

I'm Crazy as hell & I approved this message!

8. I don't know either!
It is the Black budget-NSA, CIA, the infamous classified operations budget, the KLH12 satellites on the secret shuttle missions, the hardware to eavesdrop on our phone calls, things of that nature and more. The goodies at Groom Lake...

5. What Are We Supposed to Do With Old, Worn-Out Flags?
"The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be disposed of in a dignified manner, preferably by burning." U.S. Flag Code

So, according the U.S. Flag code, burning the flag does not disrespect it at all.
