Plan to move NORAD opposed
hmmmmm ...more waste or what?

July 29, 2006
U.S. Rep. Joel Hefley said Friday he has grave concerns about the military's decision to move surveillance operations out of Cheyenne Mountain, southwest of Colorado Springs.

Hefley, a Republican whose district includes Colorado Springs, said the military has spent more than $700 million to modernize Cheyenne Mountain since Sept. 11, 2001. Surveillance crews from both the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command will be transferred from the mountain to nearby Peterson Air Force Base, the military announced Friday.

"This unlikely move by NORAD and USNORTHCOM disappoints a great many of us who agreed to renovations in order to counteract worldwide terrorism," Hefley said Friday.

"We have dedicated enormous sums of money to the facility itself as well as to the advanced technologies needed for quick responses in the event of a national crisis."

1. I dunno if that guy's a dem or a repub, but I agree with him
From what I gather, this is about making some senior staff people comfy and not making them commute to a cave every day.

I also wonder if the 'cave' thing is biting ol' rummy in the ass .......

2. He's a pro-military-spending repub, but he's right about the NORAD issue.

And not just because it's in his district. He's not my rep, but I know that he's got a streak of honesty in him, which is why he was asked to step down as chair of the House Ethics Committee last year, when he dared point a few fingers at fellow (R)'s.

5. he is, at least until jan, my rep, and the whole ethics committee thing
was about the only truly honest thing he has done.

I wonder if we can get our $700m back if they move it? on the other hand, most people do not realize that NORAD sits on an earthquake fault that runs right down cheyenne mountain. very entertaining, I always thought.

7. I don't get a lot of news about reps other than my own (DeGette),
so my limited knowledge of Hefley was that he stood his ground on the Ethics Committee. That, and if he had his way he'd spend us into the poor house with missile defense and new armaments.

So I defer to your experience -- my revised statement is: "He has a razor-thin streak of honesty..."

6. But they have to relocate NORAD!
After all, Stargate Command more than likely needs the extra space for their operations..........

8. K&R! they'll soon shut it down cause HALLIBURTON needs more cash....
"Geez," Bushboy says, "Who needs this old Norad thingy."

Yes indeed, we gotta build that Iraqi infrastructure every day so insurgents can blow it up every night, if Halliburton insurgents don't beat them to it.
