10. And a very good thought at that! |
|
I absolutely agree that Congress is the root of all evil in our current mess. Beyond that I really wouldn't want to nationalize any industry. I do have some very entertaining thoughts of many CEO's spending some vacation time at a lovely Federal Facility on the sunny island of Cuba working on their tans.

24. How can one just choose one? |
|
When one considers all the benefits that TVA has brought from Virginia to Mississippi, it is almost impossible to argue with socialized electricity. Why should a corporation that has a monopoly rake in windfall profits to the shareholders when it is now a necessity of modern life? Why should we subsidize our nation's dwindling patrimony of fossil fuel to the benefit of a handful of shareholders? Is education not as much a right as a privledge? Most would say yes, then why not health care? Why should Boeing and Martin Marietta and Haliburton get all the profit for our lethal toys? Why should the richest piece of real estate on earth be held hostage to Asian slave wages for our trinkets? Why should the Natural Child of the Enlightenment be a bastard child of Rushdoony and Ayn Rand these days? I'll take all of the above.

If the corporate elite can not make money off all these invasions the US/Israel keeps doing, then we would not have so many invasions.

Put the Pharmas on notice that they can't cheat anybody anymore.
Put the medical insurance industry out of business. It basically a protection racket, not unlike the mob. "Pay us or you are screwed." Screw you.

Threatening to do something bad to someone if they don't pay you and refusing to do something good for someone if they don't pay you are totally different.
If you attempt to compulsorily nationalise the medical insurance agency or "put it out of business", then all the people investing in it will run like hares, it will largely collapse before the governemnt gets its hands on it, as will the American economy once investors realise that their assets are no longer safe from government confiscation.
Two of the key differences between taxation and government theft is that people know they are going to have to pay tax on something when they buy it, and that taxation is reasonably equitably distributed - taxing the rich more than the poor, or earned wealth less than unearned, is one thing, but taxing one person considerably more than someone else of equal wealth without good reason - which is what government confiscation of one particular industry but not others would be - is quite another.
The establishement of a national health service would benefit America massively, but it needs to be done on a strictly "voluntary" basis, paid for by general taxation, and running in parallel with the existing private health care industry, not by confiscation (although their profits will drop considerably due to the competition).
This is precisely what the last bit of the fifth ammendment is for.
It's exactly the same issue as having an army being good, but having a draft being bad.

If you magically nationalized everything overnight, nothing would change. Sure, "ownership" would magically change hands, but what does that matter? As a practical matter, would the management change? Highly unlikely. Why? There's a nonpartisan revolving door between business and government. This would prove to be nothing more than cheap window dressing, much like term limits. A lot of smoke, but no fire.

It's not that I support, nor do I think it is even desirable to, nationalize it. We need to get the insurance industry, and thereby the profit motive, out of it.
I would also include education and justice.

|
The current system, employing thousands of teenagers and ne'er-do-wells dashing around at unsafe speeds in often poorly-maintained vehicles wreaks havoc on the environment and is a danger to the public safety. We would be much better served with something more along the lines of the Post Office.

You do realise, don't you, that at the first whisper that an American industry is going to be compulsorily nationalised, all the investors in it, and in anything else that they thing might suffer the same fate, will run like hares, and the American economy will go "poof!", don't you?
A national health service (for example) is a wonderful idea, but the way to achieve it is to provide it in parallel with the existing health-care industry, and by hiring as many doctors as are willing to work for it (as was done here in the UK), not by compulsory purchase.
The problem in areas like that is the *absence* of free-at-point-of-use state provision, *not* the presence of expensive private health care (which actually makes things better, just not as much as a national health service would).

quite the opposite. It usually means a bureaucrat who is responsible to no one controls it.

34. i voted to nationalize Big Oil |
|
medical affects more of us in a very direct way ... but Big Oil is absolutely strangling everything the government does ...
if they weren't driving our policy and bankrupting the nation with overseas idiocy, i think there would be a much more responsive government and many other changes would result ...
the good news is there's no reason to limit nationalizing corrupt industries to just a single industry ... let's do both Big Oil (not small oil) and the medical industry as well ...
