Supporters ...What Has Lieberman Done Right? |
|
Here is the part I dont get. I can find endless people who can give me lengthy lists of where Lieberman has gone wrong; the war, foul trade, Alito, Roberts, Shaivo, Pro Credit card Lobby, Willingness to scrap social security, medicaid ect ... But when asked, his supporters will say that he has also done a lot of good things ... Hmm ... Would some of his supporters help me here. What has he done right. Could you name some of the positive things he has worked for? I cant think of a single one. If he didnt have a "D" next to his name I wouldnt be able to tell him and Bill Frist apart.

Wow
He lost already. Time for you to get a life.
What has Lamont done right?
Picked an idiot to run against.
Maybe it might be time to put your hatred toward Republicans.

What could be a more interesting topic on this fine morning? This is our future here. For myself, I have long been a believer in the rhetoric that the democratic party espouses, but my support has become increasingly muted as I have watched the likes of Lieberman vote continuously AGAINST my "CORE" beliefs. This is a conversation we need to have as we once again define what the democratic party is. Lieberman was just one race but the outcome of this conversation will define our future. Is this democratic party one of pure rhetoric or is it the party that acts to make that rhetoric actual policy. We shall see.

2. I am a Lamont supporter but have carried a lot of water for Lieberman |
|
so I will tell you what I admire about Lieberman.
Lieberman was an early supporter of LGBT rights. The fact he is a very religious man makes that support even more beneficial. Few Democrats supported ENDA back in the 1970's which Lieberman did in CT. Lieberman has a nearly perfect enviromental record. Lieberman has been a terrific supporter of Civil Rights. Registering voters in MS was a risky and great thing he did as a young man. All of those are admirable things.

but...Lieberman was only willing to go as far as civil unions, not equal rights to marriage. As far as civil rights go, he voted against some things like habeas corpus recently. He has gone downhill since his big stand in the 70's.

5. Lifetime ACLU Rating Only 50% or So |
|
Being in favor of civil rights seems like a no-brainer, particularly for a Democrat. Being in favor of civil rights only 50% of the time seems pretty weak, no?

6. civil rights and civil liberties are two different things |
|
and are sometimes at odds. To take one example, speech codes. Many civil rights groups favor codes banning racist or sexist or homophobic speech while most civil libertarians don't. Thus one can have a great civil rights record, as Lieberman does, and have a mediocre civil liberties record, as he also does. I also know that the ACLU tends to count a very small number of votes per session which skews their scores.

Interesting points.
Counting only a small number of truly-important votes is a good thing - the DLC types have made it a habit to vote to the left on most legislation, but to the right on the things that count - that way they can claim an 85% (or whatever) left voting record, while still delivering the goods to their patrons when it counts.

I think the ACLU goes to far in the small number direction.

8. I think voters were voting on his more recent (Bush-era) past rather |

than his more distant past. Plus, the arrogant petulance put a lot of voters off.
