(Sen. Susan) Collins (R. ME) endorses Lieberman in re-election bid
http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/006759.html

Sen. Joseph Lieberman's bid for re-election as an independent has received a solid endorsement from the chairwoman of the Homeland Security Committee.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins said she fully supports Lieberman, ranking Democrat on her committee. He is running as an independent after losing his Connecticut primary to political newcomer Ned Lamont.

Lamont managed to defeat Lieberman in an election that was viewed by many as a referendum on Iraq and President George W. Bush's handling of the war.

5. Maybe
but endorsements like this one, from a moderate New England Republican, probably don't help Lamont too much.

7. People Do Not Like Republicans Just Now, Ma'am
Nor do many believe anymore in the concept of a "moderate Republican" at all. Anything that identifies Lieberman with Republicans in this race will asist Mr. Lamont, by promoting a backlash among Democrats currently on the fence. Lieberman can hardly promote himself as the "real" Democrat fighting for the "soul" of the Democratic Party if his most prominent backers are Republicans....

11. Not really
The only people who would object to Collins' endorsement are already in Lamont's camp. Susan Collins is very much in the mold of Republicans like Chris Shays and Nancy Johnson, who have been elected and reelected in Connecticut on the strength of their appeal to independents, who outnumber registered Democrats.

13. This Year, Sir
There will be a number of people desirous of simply casting a ballot against Republicans, and endorsements from any of that flock will serve to indicate in this particular race how that is to be really done.

16. Those people are already in Lamont's corner
Perhaps you think the "send the Republicans a message by voting against Joe Lieberman" contingent represents a majority of the statewide electorate. But seeing how they only represented a bare majority of the Democratic primary electorate, that seems quite a stretch.

17. There Are Doubtless Waverers, Sir
It is still many weeks to the actual casting of ballots, and Lieberman does not seem to be comporting himself well. We shall see, of course: it is because of disagreements like this they actually make the horses run around the track before any money changes hands....

9. If so, then what do you call Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe?
There just aren't every many left. They're an endangered species.

14. But they are surely moderates at least. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to
replace with Dems. But they are not Sam Brownback or Pat Roberts (my 2 Senators). I'd gladly take one of them if I could rid myself of those 2 asses.

18. Some DU'ers can't tell the difference
They divide politicians into two categories -- those they agree with 100% of the time, and everybody else. To these people, there's no difference between Lieberman, Collins, Brownback, etc. I'm sure that if they spend time thinking about it, they'd throw Hillary Clinton into this group as well.

19. There Is No Important Difference, Sir
Between creatures like Snow and Collins, and creatures like Brownback or Frist or Santorum, nor will there be so long as the former sort remain as Republicans, and contribute to that gang's majority status.

15. Su-san Col-lins makes me puke
in stultifying slow motion. She makes Lorraine Bracco sound like the FedEx man.

With her vapid smile and her maddeningly slow diction, she somehow keeps one from hearing the utter inanity of her positions on things.
