Lamest reason for not voting |
|
I give a friend of mine a ride to the gym every morning. We talk about life, etc, or what topics one can think of at 4am, but not really about politics. Today, 9/19, is primary day in Massachusetts and we had the following exchange:
meegbear: Today is primary day, don't forget to vote. TT: Oh, I don't vote. I'm not registered. mb: You never registered to vote? TT: Well I was, but I never signed the voter renewal form, so I'm not on the roster. mb: Why'd you do that. TT: Because when they select people for jury duty, they use the voter registration lists and I don't want to be called.
:wow:
Checking online, only cases that goto the federal courthouses use voter registrations. The rest are drawn from street lists. I will inform him about this tomorrow.
Lame.

5. I have heard many people use that excuse for not voting |
|
Personally, Jury Duty is part of the American experience that a minority have had the opportunity to take part in. It is part of a democratic system of government that we all should be willing to give our time for.

A friend of mine never votes because election day usually falls on the third day of hunting season. As he puts it:
"I'm damn sure not commin' out of my tree stand just to vote."
And if you ask him about absentee ballots, he'll just say that it takes too much time.
Fear of jury duty I can understand, just plain lazyness........:banghead:

8. That's a Better "Excuse" Than Some |
|
Not that I agree, but the people who say, "it doesn't matter" irk me much more and that is what I keep hearing.

10. And jury duty in Massachusetts is a breeze |
|
One day or one trial. I was called every three years while I lived in the state. I'd go to the courthouse...sit around for the morning...and each time the judge would then dismiss us at lunch time. Jury duty completed.
Massachusetts has one of the most civilized forms of jury duty. It's really silly to use that as an excuse to not register to vote.

11. personally I'm against jury duty at all |
|
except for criminal cases. It's antiquated & cumbersome, and has no bearing on whether "justice" is done or not. Just let Judge Judy decide the bulk of those petty civil cases.
The way to get knocked off a jury is to appear intelligent and alert. If you stare blankly into space and nod off, you will be picked. To get off, it also helps to say you believe jury duty is a waste of time.
I would never let this stop me from voting! Much too passive.

12. I personally know a couple |
|
of college professors who aren't registered to vote because they don't want to be called to jury duty.
College professors!
Most states also use driver's license lists. And I've been a registered voter since 1976, been a registered driver even longer, and I've only been called once in my life for jury duty. Which I consider a shame, because I'd love to serve on a jury. Although I suspect that since I'm now a paralegal I'd be booted off almost any jury I might be called for.

13. The last letter I sent back to the court, in response to jury duty |
|
Simply stated my open hostility towards the courts and LEO's in general. Also that I understand the concept of jury nullification.
I believe they were sympathetic, I have not recieved another summons since.
And the poor slob managing my FBI file got more shit to file.

14. I was called for jury duty three times by the state of California. |
|
It was based on my driver's license, not my voter registration. The third time, I had moved out of state.
