Help an old clown feel good. Say something positive about the Virginia
Senate race.

Tell this old clown that you, too, think Webb will win in the end. Say that the recent infusion of cash into his campaign will carry the day. Say that the DSCC will work their asses off for him. Tell me, PLEASE that Felix is toast.

Please make this old clown feel better on this rainy day.

I want all our people to win, but I really, really, really want Felix gone and Jim Webb in.

1. I know Felix has the nutcase vote in the southern part of the state
but he's not somebody who inspires much enthusiasm, even among the bible clutching, hymn singing, sex hating, arm waving crowd. He's as exciting as a cold, greasy pork chop.

This election is up for grabs IMO, because the concentrated rottenness known as the GOP is going to turn off a lot of their voters. "Do I get home/pick the kids up from daycare/get to watch a little TV/eat some dinner or do I stand in line to vote for Felix?"

Something tells me what the decision will be.

2. Thanks Warpy .... I'm clutching at straws here .....
Virginia was the first 'old Dem' southern state to go repub (60? 64?). It was a former US capitol and a former Confederate capitol. Throughout history that state has been a trend setter. I want them back in our camp so bad I can taste it.

5. straws? nah ... how about a poll?
the polls in VA are all over the place ...

here's one to lift your spirits a little:

source: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/15047082/

If the 2006 election for Virginia’s U.S. Senate seat were held today, would you vote for:

WEBB 43%

ALLEN 43%

12. The nail biting ......
.... its all about the nnail biting. Mine are down to the nubs! All the other races seem so much clearer. Even NJ seems to be okay now. But this thing in Virginny just keeps hanging right there in the MOE. I'm having a real 'instant gratification' attack about this one.

19. controlling the Senate ...
my current read is that the Dems will win (close contests only) MT, MD, OH, PA, NJ, RI, and TN too ... the tough ones will be MO and VA ... we have better chances in MO ... VA is definitely winnable ... it's hard to believe but the Dems have a very, very real chance of taking back the Senate ...

as you've astutely observed, though, Lieberman is clearly ahead and he cannot be relied on for support ... we need 51 Senators WITHOUT Lieberman ...

and, the wild card? IRAN ... if they know they're going to lose, they're going to throw Iran as their "hail mary" pass ...

29. Hang on, Warpy -- I was stationed at Fort Monroe VA
Down there in the Tidewater area. While I am aware that the denizens of that area are conservative to their bone marrow, they also respect the military (save for several of the bars in Norfolk) and, I will bet, put more stock in a patriot and true hero such as Webb than they do in a let's-pretend smart-assed pansy like Allen.
Plus, I'll also bet that the "n-word" and the macaca crack doesn't fly in the Old Dominion as it once did. I can't speak for western Virginia, but I think Webb will do quite well in Tidewater.
John
But, hell, I've been gone from there for thirty years -- what do I know?

30. You know, John ........
...... that's my own calculus for Tidewater. Conservative but pro military and pro vet. Particularly a former REPUBLIC PARTY SecNav who quit when that same REPUBLIC PARTY was out to screw the Navy under the vaunted St. Ronnie. Webb's FAR more one of them than is Football Father Felix.

31. Exactly so
For emphasis -- Norfolk IS the Navy and the Navy IS Norfolk (although, as an Army vet, I'd also note that it's the hometown of our own David Hackworth, too). I have many, many fond memories of the area -- none of which have anything to do with politics. But it sure was a great place to be in those end-of-Vietnam days, when the military wasn't particularly admired in much of the rest of the country.
John
I guarantee you Norfolk remembers Webb well and positively. I remember Norfolk in the same way.

3. I think the same voting pattern that allowed Chuck Robb to survive
the onslaught by Oliver North will prevail in this race, and that the 'Robb' voter will go for the 'Webb' option over a mean-spirited race-baiting thug like Cement-Head Allen.

The trend nationally, plus the new pile of cash, all point to a Webb victory in Virginia.

Allen has given reason for voters to doubt him, and Webb has fewer negatives for conservative or moderate voters.

25. Yes. It makes sense for that demographic to give a long, fair look to
Jim Webb.

How sweet it would be to hear an early projection from the Old Dominion of a Webb upset over Allen.

The Webb Campaign, imho, needs to focus on the Richmond area. If Webb can take Richmond, he's in. Northern VA and the southwest are going to go with him. Are you presently working on his campaign?

6. I think there's a really good chance for webb to win, if for no other
than that to deflect charges of racism he had to admit to having a jewish mother, which won't play well with his racist buddies.
So, he's pissing off both ends of the spectrum, leaving the middle, which will hardly vote for an extremist.

I suspect webb will win, diebold notwithstanding.

7. Saw Jim's new ad last night...
focusing on the chimp and Felix saying stay the course, juxtaposed with the chaos that is going on in Iraq--ends with Jim saying into the camera, we need leaders in the Senate, not followers--it's a good one.

It's going to be a VERY tight race, a toss-up probably, Democratic turn-out, especially among Northern Virginians and African Americans in Richmond will be the key for Webb.

8. Even if Webb does not win this race
Which btw no one thought he had a snowball's chance of winning before all the racism stuff hit the papers.

Even if .. Allen is destroyed as a national figure with the chance of running for the presidency. Imagine that racist piece of crap as the President of the USA. Ok, you laugh but before all this crap hit people were pushing in that direction.

Its actually a testement to slow deliberate change in the ideas of people that a guy with no chance at all is now going to make this race close if not win it outright from a Senator that everyone saw a presidential hopeful.

Think about that for a second the next time you see someone screaming about the stupidity of the Virginia voters.

Considering all the crap and smears thrown at Webb and the fact Kaine won against a Repuke I actually see it as a slow sign that VA is changing to a competitive and eventually one day soon a big battleground state.

22. Yeah, I saw that ......
all the polls have it tied in the 40s or with Allen up, but within the MOE. To me, in total, that says he's ahead. But even at that, there are still 14% undecided. I find that hopeful. I have to think that anyone undecided at less than 30 days out has bad feelings about the 'known quantity' incumbent.

26. Well, wish I had a more positive tone for ya, but...
of all the tossup possibilities we have in which the Dems can pick up a GOP seat, I consider Virginia to be the least likely.

Now, that is bad. However, there are positives. Since Webb has drawn so close to Allen:

1) Allen's presidential aspirations are DOA and

2) More importantly, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has been forced to send tons of cash to Virginia that they hadn't planned on. As a result, other tossup races are not receiving the cash they expected.

Thus, while I don't think we'll win in Virginia, it we manage to win in Tennessee, Missouri and/or New Jersey, you can thank the Virginia senatorial campaign in part. I know that's cold comfort, but ...

27. Man, its been raining here all day, and now, right onto my parade .....
.... you come along and rain even harder! :)

I understand what you're saying, and it can certainly happen just like you suggest it might.

I'm still a little more hopeful. I've seen Jim Webb and he strikes me as *exactly* the kind of guy who will appeal to a broad spectrum of Virginians. I'm still waiting to see what happens when he starts spending some serious ad money. If he's where he is now with relatively little having been spent (admittedly a lot of that is beacuse of Felx's gaffes more than anythign Webb did), I think he could move up juuuuuust enough to take it in November.

But yeah ...... you're view's not wrong either. And mine could easily be these rose colored glasses I like to wear.
