Ulster County resolution calls for investigation of Bush

By Katie Young / Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, NY - The Ulster County Legislature will vote next month on a resolution calling for an investigation of President Bush and his possible impeachment.

The resolution, urged by members of local anti-war and anti-violence groups, was approved 4-1 this week by the Legislature's Efficiency, Reform and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee. The "no" vote was cast by Susan Cummings, R-Ellenville.

The Ulster County resolution supports a congressional resolution co-sponsored by Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, that calls for the formation of a select committee to investigate the run-up to the war in Iraq and aspects of the war itself. Among other things, the Hinchey resolution calls for an investigation into whether prewar intelligence was manipulated by the Bush White House and whether the torture of war prisoners has been encouraged by the administration.

The federal investigation would focus on, among other things, prewar weapons inspections in Iraq; whether Iraq possessed nuclear, chemical and/or biological weapons; and whether there were ties between Iraq and the al-Qaida terrorist organization. The select committee then would recommend whether grounds for impeachment of the president exist.

The Ulster County resolution states that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney misled Congress and the American people in justifying the war in Iraq and have infringed on the rights of American citizens with illegal surveillance and the indefinite detention of terror suspects.
