New Robin Williams film to take on electronic voting machine fraud
The film "Man of the Year" which comes to theaters on Friday will deal with electronic voting machine fraud. The film stars Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, and Lewis Black and is directed by Barry Levinson. Here is an excerpt from an early review of the film:

In this jaunt, Robin plays Todd Dobbs a late night talk show host of a program that appears to be a cross between The Daily Show and The Tonight Show. Dobbs seems to have a political opinion about every issue, usually riffing about it in front of his audience. One night a young woman asks him the question, “Why don’t you run?” and off goes our premise.

The TV show writers and producers see this run as a great bit for the show and begin pushing to get Dobbs on the ballot. No one thinks he can win, but it does make for great television. Even his manager (Christopher Walken) loves the idea if for no other reason than to build his audience.

Dobbs though is taking this seriously, never throwing a one-liner on stage. At the beginning, he believes this is a solemn endeavor. But one night, during the Presidential Debate, he sees the folly of his way of campaigning and becomes the court jester of the stage, riffing and attacking his opponents. This performance turns the campaign into a solid three-man race, with the entire buzz going with Dobbs.

On the other side of the movie, Eleanor Green (Laura Linney) works for a company that has the contract to put new electronic voting booths in every precinct in the country. On a beta test of the programming, she discovers something is amiss. The machines seem to work at the local level, but when the major votes are tallied, the system keeps handing victory to the same person, not matter what the actual vote count. She realizes that if this is not fixed, the election will be a fraud. She tried to contact her bosses, but the company understands that if this information gets out it will bankrupt everyone.

2. It Is Excellent News!!!
We should have had 6 years of Democrats, and now people will get a clue as to why we didn't, and why we are where we are today.

If a Democrat were in office when 9-11 happened, we would not be seeing the hell we see today in the Middle East.

7. 9-11 wouldn't have even happened if Gore was Prez
For one he wouldn't let PNAC orchestrate or talk him into letting it happen.

Yup no matter what anyone says I will always believe in PNAC's guilt for 9/11. From the fact that it was their wet dream (we need another Pearl Harbor style attack) to the fact that all of a sudden when junior idiot squatted in the white house the all stars of PNAC found themselves employment within his cabinet and vice prez positions.

4. Jon Stewart for President - The Movie

http://throwawayyourtv.com/2006/10/man-of-year-is-about...
http://throwawayyourtv.com/2006/08/jon-stewart-for-pres...

It's pretty obvious somebody in some board room said "Y'now, What if Jon Stewart actually did run for President?"

If the idea of a "fake news man" running for President isn't enough evidence to suggest that this is about Jon Stewart... Well Lewis Black is also in the film. I will definitely be watching this one. Also Check out the film's homepage for more clips.

5. Robin was on Bill Maher in DC
along with Chris Matthews (and others). Matthews is in the film (cameo). On Maher's show he got all perturbed when the insinuation of taking election fraud seriously came up. He tries to pretend he's a hardliner questing for truth, but revealed himself as a shill with the subject of election fraud.

12. Maybe he hasn't researched the issue
I wouldn't blame a comedian for not being willing to tackle an issue like vote fraud. If he hasn't really looked into the issue, then he is better suited to avoid the topic. Don't make the mistake in assuming that because a movie makes a reference to an issue, that the star of the movie is either knowledgable of the matter, or even agrees with the point being made. Just be glad that the issue is even being raised.

14. I think the poster was refering to Chris Matthews not Robin Williams
I didn't actually see Maher when Matthews an Williams were on but the way I interpreted the words of the poster you replied to I thought they were saying that Matthews was the ignorant one.

I am sure Robin Williams probably is aware of this issue, as generally actors are required to do some research when dealing with any film role. Knowing Robin Williams I don't think he would take a role like this if he did not take the issue seriously.

18. Right, I was refering to Matthews.
Williams is way too sharp not to know about election fraud. Maher was very slow to catch on after 2004, but has kinda gotten up to speed.

There were jokes about the "October surprise" being Diebold.

32. You're absolutely right! I'm surprised you haven't gotten any replies
This would be a *terrific* time to do some real activist activizing. :)

I'd like to suggest that you come up with some ideas for what could be printed out (a lot of us don't have the time to think up everything from scratch), and do a post on just this topic--preferably to GD, where more will see it.

I will definitely do what I can to keep it kicked, because I think this is a tremendous opportunity to reach those who don't know about this issue, yet.

Yeah, a lot of people will go because it's something we know and care deeply about. But, a lot will go because it's a new Robin Williams movie, and they aren't aware of what is really happening.

So, being there --especially when they come out--with a hand out with more info, and suggestions for things to do could be quite helpful.

Thanks for reminding us all of our own part in this! :applause:

I hope to see your post about this soon--reply here, or send me a PM.

15. That is sweet.
The previews hint at none of this which makes me :bounce: since the people being pulled in will get a nice little surprise that may or may not get them thinking about November (and past Novembers).

Of course if it's a hit the Pukes will parrot the tired old phrase "it's only a movie".

25. I expect the movie will be much better than what the critics say
I have a feeling that it may be a movie that does not catch on right away with the general public, but people who know what is going on with the electronic voting machines will really like it.

The early reviews suggest that it is a movie that is unwilling to take a serious stand because it ignores big divisive issues such as Iraq, but I would argue that was a very smart move for them to avoid any strong partisan stances and focus on election fraud. They need to educate people who are not normally paying close attention to politics, and keeping away from the divisive issues will get independents and conservatives to think about this issue that generally gets ignored.

Sure there have been several movies that dealt with election fraud in the past, but to my knowledge this is the first one that deals with a type of election fraud that is currently taking place and that is why this is so significant.

So my advice is ignore the reviews and just go no matter what, even if you don't like Robin Williams (who I think is a great actor) if this film has a big opening weekend it could bring a lot of attention to this issue.

27. Please let me play "devils advocate"???
What if this movie could un intentionally turn around and "bite us in the ass"? When is the movie due for release? Just suppose we (Dem's) take not only the House, but the Senate too, by a small margin. Wouldn't this give the neo cons ammo to say WE RIGGED THE VOTE IN OUR FAVOR, and because they are still in power they will hold on until it gets straightened out or there is a re- count. By this time THEY KNOW they are being flushed down the toilet, and can take the country down, any way they please!!!?????

35. I think the idea is to get the
light shining on the voting machines..no way have they ever gone in our favor through "errors".

I have no doubt that there will be plenty of confusion around voting time this year as in the past. When some first heard of diebold and programming votes to register for the repukes they're were incredulous. Now it is coming into the mainstream where it should be.

(and I hope they have reason to cry about SOMETHING Nov. 7th), it's not a bad thing. It's the only way we'll get real bi-partisan election reform. Let 'em bitch & moan. It's their turn to anyway. .

39. I doubt anyone could believe Dems have the power to rig.
Now, the NEXT election is another story. But when the contracts for the machines are approved by Republicans, the companies contracted with are owned by Republicans, the news about the machines' vulnerability is squashed by Republicans, who's going to believe that Dems rigged the election? It strains even a typical Repugs credulity.

26. So far it's 50/50 at rottentomatoes.com
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 01:45 PM by Wednesdays
Anytime I want to see what reviewers are saying about a present or past movie, I rely on rottentomatoes.com, because it reflects what a huge sample of reviewers say about a film. They make an assessment of (theoretically) every major review written about the movie and judge whether the review is generally positive or negative. If a film gets 60% or more positive, it's considered "fresh" (as opposed to rotten). A movie destined to become a classic is usually rated in the 90s, while a horrid dud scores in the single digits.

So far, there are only 4 reviews for this film, but keep an eye on the page because that number is sure to soar by Friday. Of the 4 early reviews, it's 50/50 positive-negative...however, one review was negative because the movie didn't come out forceful enough against the political status quo!

The public can leave opinions on the page, too, so be sure to voice your support there!

29. I say go to this film no matter what the reviews say
We need to show that we are interested in this issue, and we need to make people realize that the issues raised in this film are very real.

The people who made this film are doing us a great service by doing their part to get the public talking about this issue, and they deserve our support.

This movie having a big opening weekend and lots of talk could seriously help educate people, so please go to see this movie opening weekend no matter what kind of reviews it gets.

28. what's cool about this is that it will give license to the media reporters
who really WANT to talk about this but aren't able to because of their corporate bosses, to talk freely about the kinds of issues we've been discussing here for years regarding diebold vote counting fraud.

with this newfound freedom, with so much noise on the air about it, people will really pay attention to exit polls v. election results, and demand recounts and paper trails and the whole nine yards.
