Poll question: Should Dems, before the election, pledge to impeach bush?
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 12:24 AM by Skip Intro
There is a http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2341252&mesg_id=2341252">thead in GD about Pelosi saying she "absolutely" will not seek impeachment because "we don't have time for that."

Personally, I think this is deeper than the surface statement. At least two possibilities exist.

First, maybe this is a political strategy. Should Pelosi step aside as speaker after the election, if we take control of the House, the future speaker would not be bound that "assurance."

A second possibility would be that investigations, and we know there will be investigations if we win control of one or both houses, will yield results. If they yield evidence of impeachable offenses, Dems and rupukes alike will be duty-bound to pursue justice, per the Constitution. Claims made before the investigations can't be held. I can imagine Pelosi saying, if confronted on this particular statement, or "pledge," "well, no one could ever have imagined such criminal activity by the current administration."

At any rate, I don't know if it is politically wise to pledge that you will try to impeach the resident upon winning, but my hunch is, its smarter not to. We are trying to win an election, and you do that by attracting the most voters. So I'm ok with this statement from Pelosi. Maybe its a strategy that allows us to take the wind out of the pathetic repuke ploy to lure voters to support them beacuse Dems will hold them accountable if we win. I have to think there are bigger strategies behind the scenes, and that this time, Dems know what they are doing. I hope I'm not wrong.

Anyway, I wanted to check the pulse of DU on this issue. What do you think? Should Dems pledge to impeach, or pledge not to impeach? Or something else?

2. Why give the Rs something concrete to energize their base?
Let them twist in the wind with doubt until after the elections, then decide what can been done and should be done (not necessarily the same thing).

3. funny how it seems no matter.......
what has been said about this bunch of morans for five years has gained much traction until now, with the foley scandal. i think the dems are doing the right thing, just let these folks self-destruct. no sense riling up the base with any talk about impeachment.

for SOMETHING, and that we recognize how disastrous the last six years have been.

Besides, I truly believe that, if Clinton gets impeached for a BJ and Bush gets a pass on all the shit that's gone down, it will only foster continued cynicism about our government.

5. No. Why even pay attention to the sick fuck?
I practically vomit when I see him on TV anymore. Speaking ONLY to his true believers (real Americans cant get within 500 feet of him). He is irrelevant, already a lame duck. He may not even be invited to the 2008 GOP convention! If we win control of the House & Senate the republicans may request he be impeached!

6. Wisely stated
What is the single most obvious emblem of the hatred that every nasty dictatorship in the world has been known by?
It is the fact that those leaders cannot appear anywhere except when under heavily armed guard and only in front of worshipful sycophants.

My own view has it that we have two massive battles in this culture war that threatens the country and world peace and those are the one which we are currently engaged in and which is beginning to look as though it may be turning positive-to drive this horrid batch from power and begin the process of restoration.

The second, to begin immediately on attaining victory in the first and that is, though I am repulsed by the word, to purge the party of those immature, aging juvenile delinquents who have worn the uniform of liberalism but are inimical to the practice thereof, having found it easier to ascend to power by pretending to be something they ain't.

That must be done to end the system of legalized bribery surrounding the lobbyists, their too open access to congress, and the resultant corporate fascism and install people of conscience. One may have differences with the methods of ms. Pelosi but that is the situation as it is now. Now we have to get behind her and push.
