Can we stop with the pithy comments about Hastert's roommate situation?
It is an extremely common practice for Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle to share apartments, especially among those that do not want a permanent residence in Washington so as to create the impression they remain in touch with their districts. Hell, it used to be common that Democratic and Republican Congressmen would actually live together! It has NOTHING to do with being gay. It is a non-story in every sense of the word, unless you can prove otherwise specifically.

All the pithy comments do is display a level of ignorance unbecoming of DU. Furthermore, it could easily be seen as a slight to the gay community, among whom number some of our greatest allies.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

1. Why do you care?
I'm sure Hastert doesn't mind if people think he is gay.

3. Well, his roommate situation wouldn't be worth commenting on,
except for the fact the wife stays in a hotel--alone--when she comes to town.

Now I realize that at Denny's weight he probably snores like a jetliner on takeoff and that could very well be the reason, but I also know something else is about to break.

Jabba the Hastert is just hanging on because he wants to be in line if Stupid finally has that total breakdown and has to be carted out on a stretcher, in restraints.

4. My niece's husband is a lobbyist in Missouri.
He says it's pretty common for state lawmakers to have lobbyists for room-mates there.

7. I was trying like hell yesterday to correct people on the roommates
I was all over this thread yesterday trying to get people to stick to the facts. Makes us look like a bunch of freepers when everybody is getting the facts wrong

8. agreed. I made a post saying the same thing yesterday... however,
even though I'm new here, I would take issue with your phrasing that gays "number some of our greatest allies". I would like to think that gays are not just our allies, but are, in fact, part of the "us" to which you refer. The phrasing made me feel like gays are separate from us and I would rather think of us all as the same type of people with similar values where sexual orientation, race, religion, etc... doesn't have to be thought about. Otherwise you would have to define all the various groups and then what group is it that is considered "us" that would have the other groups as allies?

10. You know what's funny?
I've done exactly what you've asked in the past and gotten flamed for it. It's a no-win.

For the record, I love the idea - it's one I hold close to my heart. I wish we had a "Unity Caucus" to go along with the CBC and Latino Congressional Caucuses.

9. I think it's fair to observe
Here's a quote from Lawrence O'Donnell

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lawrence-odonnell/who-is-scott-palmer_b_31171.html

"There are plenty of odd couple Congressmen who have roomed together on Capitol Hill, but I have never heard of a chief of staff who rooms with his boss. It is beyond unusual. But it must have its advantages. Anything they forget to tell each other at the office, they have until bedtime to catch up on. And then there's breakfast for anything they forgot to tell each other before falling asleep. And then there's all day at the office. Hastert and Palmer are together more than any other co-workers in the Congress."

Coupling that with his wife not staying with him when she is in town I think it's fair to bring it up. Only now though that there is a possibility that they were covering up for Foley out of self-preservation not just the party power but their own secrets. Do any of us know the facts? No. If it's connected to the overall cover-up I think it's fair game. I personally am for outing Republicans because they have actively worked to deny the rights of homosexual Americans and make them social pariahs. If they are hypocrites, and the whole party that knows of their sexuality but hides it in order to pursue this hateful agenda, the truth should be told.
