Foley's e-mail to governor voices fear White House snubbed him

By Dara Kam

Palm Beach Post Capital Bureau

Thursday, October 12, 2006

TALLAHASSEE — E-mails from former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley to Gov. Jeb Bush reveal that Foley feared two years ago the White House was shunning him, and he called on the governor, President Bush's brother, to intercede.

Foley wrote to Gov. Bush on Sept. 29, 2004: "Have I done something to offend the White House ... I am always getting the shaft ... they came to ft pierce a few weeks ago and said I was not allowed to attend ... yet joe negron is there ... Tomorrow Potus is in Martin County and I am told I am not allowed to be there either. I can't quite figure what I have done but this is a continuing pattern of slights ... I have constantly put the President in the best possible light on everything from haiti to hurricanes ... sorry to trouble you ... and I wouldn't if this wasn't so frequent ..."

POTUS is an acronym for president of the United States. Foley's message referred to President Bush's visits to Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Jeanne.

Bush responded that day: "I will try to help. I know it is nothing you have done. Promise. I think it relates to debate prep time. Jeb."

1. Recommended.
What did the Bush know and when did he know it?

Things that make you go "hmmmm....".

2. They ALL knew about it, but kept mum and used it to keep Foley...
...under their thumb. How could they NOT know about it?

10. I side with your take - they knew, but for 2004 they would say nothing.
And they planned to say nothing in 2006, too.

25. Foley was a tool for this White House...
Just like everyone and everything else in this country. Now they're turning their backs on him -- just like that awful Harris woman.

Not for them. This thing is widening everyday.

18. Foley was Bush family friend since the early 1980s
I found this in the miami herald, 2005:
"Hours before the House vote, President Bush called Foley, a Bush family friend since the early 1980s, and asked for his support."

and also found both Laura and GWB calling him a friend

23. We've got to somehow make all of this stuff stick.
We cannot allow significant facts like this to go unnoticed by those who normally tune out news -- especially in this most critical election season. Republicans must go and the Foley Fallout will prove a key ingredient if we are to do so.

7. Foley played a big roll during the 2000 recount
Helping to deliver Palm Beach counties votes to Bush. Foley made the same mistake Katherine Harris made. They both thought their loyalty to BushCo would be rewarded.

8. Is this an attempt to distance Shrub and the Shrub machine from Foley?
I mean, hey, if it were ever known that the Kennebunkport Kowboy had fraternized with a "faggot", wouldn't that kinda eat inta his rough-'n'-tough image?

I know Shrub is not running again (thank you JEEEEZUS!), but, hey, he's still got to pretend to have some credibility for the next two (miserable) years...

11. FL Dem Party is asking for records among Foley, Jeb and Crist.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. The Florida Democratic Party is asking for any records the state attorney general's office might have on Mark Foley and his contacts with congressional pages.

The Democrats also are seeking Foley-related communications between the Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist and the office of Florida Governor Jeb Bush, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, other congressmen and the Republican National Committee.

From here

Yes, We The People want to know if Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist protected Foley's predatory behavior in order to continue to benefit from Foley's fundraising skills and to maintain GOP control of Foley's House seat.

Yes, we want to know.

12. More e-mails from Foley to Jeb Bush emerging:
More from the Palm Beach Post:

Foley also sent Gov. Bush a cryptic message in the fall of 2005, roughly coinciding with the time a former Louisiana page complained to his former sponsor, Rep. Rodney Alexander, that Foley had sent him inappropriate e-mails.
The page, then 16, said Foley asked about the boy's birthday and requested a photograph. The disclosure of the exchanges with the teen ultimately led to Foley's resignation.

"I need your thoughts on something ... are you in south florida or somewhere we can meet up," Foley messaged Bush on Oct. 3, 2005.

"I am up in Tallahassee. Will a call suffice?" Bush responded.

Foley asked Bush to call him at his Fort Pierce office or on his cellphone.
Bush and Foley have exchanged about 100 electronic messages since 1999, according to documents Bush's office released Wednesday evening. The bulk of the e-mails from Foley, who almost exclusively sent the messages from his Blackberry, concerned hurricanes, federal legislation and his recommendations for appointments.

The governor's office did not return calls Wednesday night concerning the e-mails.

The e-mails show a friendly relationship between Foley and Bush, in contrast to Bush's recent characterization of Foley's behavior as "despicable" and "disgusting."

snip

In another exchange, Bush took a swipe at state Sen. Ron Klein, a Boca Raton Democrat who is seeking to unseat U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw, R-Fort Lauderdale, in District 22.
Foley asked Bush whether Palm Beach County would receive disaster relief.

"Ron Klein said on tv last night that we were not part of the declaration," Foley wrote.

Bush confirmed Palm Beach County was included, saying of Klein: "Yes! And he knows it. What a slime."

What a guy our Jeb is!

Sorry... had to repeat it.

And if Bush knew, somebody told him. There's a LONG chain of people that knew and sent the info up the line.

Add this to the list of hearings in January

16. Very possible.
It depends on what kkkarl knew and what kkkarl told him. But then again, they were always two peas in a pod when it came to dirty campaigning and arm twisting.

See post 15 up-thread.

19. Very, very interesting.....
Why did they make them public today?? What possible reason would they want the people to think that the President would not want to talk to Mr Foley?? After all, we have all seen the pictures of Mr Bush and Foley together...they have been posted here on DU...I guess they wanted to make sure we all knew that Mr Bush had nothing to do with Mr Foley? And this goes no higher than Speaker Hastert? Got it?

20. Former Dem Campaign consultant: rumors go back to 1994
I found this guy's blog while checking out Foley's connections to Florida. His name is Joe Garcia and he seems credible. He lambasts his fellow Democrats for not using this information earlier. He claims that he first heard the rumors about Foley when working on a campaign in Florida. He wanted to use them since he felt they were pretty credible but was warned off. Here's his blog post:

In 1994, I took the job as Southern Field Director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. It was a favor to a friend.

Just in the job a few months, I heard rumors about Mr. Foley's homosexual conduct with teenage boys. But I was told by Political Director Michael Meehan to cease my investigation. Several weeks later I was dismissed. His explaination--I did not know how do run a political desk. My interpretation--I was sticking my Latino-Irish nose where it wasn't meant to be.

I had heard Foley was shot by a lover in the dierrire with buckshot in a domestic quarrel. Also, when he was Mayor of "Wellington" a Palm Beach town, he lived above a gay bar where young intoxicated patrons were brought to "sleep it off." Rumor also had it that he hosted gay parties in Tallahassee, while a Florida State Senator.

Aside from his criticism of the FDP, if this true, it means that Foley was acting up while in the Florida Senate. He served there with Charlie Crist (Repug FL ag running for governor) who is currently investigating him. This would be a conflict of interest on Crist's part. It may also mean that Crist will stall on any investigation until after the election to prevent any connection between the two coming out.

27. If Crist knew, and he must have, it will be very big in Florida...
Crist has been rumored for years to be gay down here...

Crist has a "shady" past: taking bribes to drop a big case (Kane's furniture), an illegitimate child, and now a cover-up. So far, nothing has stuck.

The main reason that the senior citizen's here would vote Crist to replace Jeb is a belief that he would keep them safe by being tough on crime (chain-gang Charlie).

Crist is ahead of Davis in the polls by a little, but if Jeb and Crist covered this up it will cost them the governor's race...everything points to Crist knowing about this - so I really, really hope someone or something comes forward.
