Will Voters Pull the Trigger?

By David S. Broder
Thursday, October 12, 2006; Page A27

The old theater adage demands that if you show a pistol in Act 1, you'd better fire the gun in Act 3. That same wisdom applies to politics.

The voters have been pointing a symbolic gun at the Republican regime in Washington for many months now. All that remains is for them to pull the trigger on Election Day.

snip//

The disillusionment is not the product of the Foley scandal, which is shifting few votes, as far as I can judge. And it also reflects more than the continuing bad news from Iraq, though that has had a large effect on public opinion.

What is driving public opinion is an overall impression that those in office -- meaning mainly Republicans -- have let things slide out of control and need to be relieved.

What voters may not know is that the same judgment has been reached by a significant number of people who are part of -- or close to -- the Republican majority. If I have heard it once, I have heard it a dozen times: Major Republican figures, including top officials of several past GOP administrations and Congresses, say, "We deserve to lose this election."

1. "WE DESERVE TO LOSE THIS ELECTION"
I was going to start a new thread with that sub line. I think it is KEY. It is the message every American needs to hear. These fucks have lost there way, they've lost their will to even try. Sometimes you just KNOW you've fucked something up really bad, and these guys know it. Despite the posturing of Ken Melman and his mealy-mouth spinsmeisters, they know that this is not how the script was supposed to go. In fact, I'd bet lots of these tools would actually like to be out from under BushCo's thumb, be done with the blackmail shit, just waiting for one wrong vote for Chimpy's boys to release the pictures of them with teenage gay hookers or something. It would probably be a HUGE relief to them to be able to be in the minority again...then they don't have to try so hard to supress their laughter when they tell Chris Matthews and Tim Russert, et al, "It's all the democrat's fault!" It'll give 'em a new meme to work with.

5. Yep, it's all your fault!
:P No worries, though I'm surprised this isn't more startling/encouraging to DUers.

12. I'm not surprised, because I think a majority of DUers is kind of...
...really busy working non-stop to win the country back from here to Nov. 7, and may have a lot less time to post on DU these days.

Therefore, it should be no surprise to anyone here if there's kind of "less replies" to topics for a while. It's even kind of "good news", in a sense.

Yeeeee! DU'ers at work:

6. Read between the lines.....
"We deserve to lose..." means we now recognize we are going to lose.
Later he states that people are fed up with "partisanship" and "bickering" and they want politicians to "work together".....WTF???
In total it means we are going to get the ass-whupping we so richly deserve, but we don't want the Democrats to treat us like we treated them for the last six years-Good Luck with that, Spin-Boy.......

7. Yeah, but why do Bush and Cheney keep confidently saying they'll win?
Are they delusional? Or do they feel assured that their buds at Diebold and ES&S can pull it off again?

I figure about a 5% flip in 2004 in the presidential race, overall, but it had some constraints on how far it could go, possibly related to the new election theft technology itself (not a smooth first run, and/or the advantage to Bush had to be pre-programmed to certain percentages, which could not easily be changed on election day, and Kerry was exceeding those percentages), thus they needed to let the dogs loose in Ohio and add in blatant vote suppression in open violation of the Voting Rights Act, using the Bushite political machine in Ohio, probably the filthiest in the nation.

But whatever constraints the election theft industry was working under in '04 seem to vanish with regard to the 4 election reform initiatives in Ohio in 2005, which were boldly flipped over, on election day, from predicted 60/40 wins, to 60/40 LOSSES--the biggest flipover we've seen yet. And, as far as I know, no one in the corporate news monopoly press even noticed, except Bob Koehler, who wrote a blistering article about it. Not a peep out of the Democratic Party, as far as I know. So they CAN get away with huge flips of the vote. Can they get away with it nationwide in '06, with all polls saying the Democrats will win?

It is interesting to speculate what will happen THIS time, if they steal it again. Election fraud/election reform activists have been quite awesome in their efforts to raise consciousness about the perils of these new electronic voting systems (which are run on TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by Bushite corporations, with virtually no audit/recount controls--a coup engineered by the biggest crooks in the Anthrax Congress, Tom Delay and Bob Ney, abetted by corporatist 'Democrats' Christopher Dodd, Terry McAuliffe and others). It's even hit the so-called "mainstream" media, bolstered by numerous scientific reports and studies by civic groups, the Conyers committee and even the GAO, all with dire warnings about the extreme insecurity and hackability of e-voting.

So, it's Nov. 8, and the Bushites--despite all the polls--have a lock on Congress for two more years. People like David Broder--and the entire war profiteering corporate news monopoly establishment--start "eating crow" and rolling out the Karl Rove "talking points." Gay marriage. Brown immigrants. Zarqawi's head and those of innocent bystanders exploded by our bombs. North Korea. And what-all: terra-terra-terra. The Iron Curtain is coming down on election fraud '06, as it did in '04. But this time the Democrats are not quite so eager to cave. Election monitors/reformers are finding anomalies in the voting statistics all over the country. We're ready this time--www.UScountvotes.org and others are on the case. Prestigious names like Robert Kennedy are involved in analyzing results and crying foul, early on. However, in every case of suspicious results, corrupt election officials call it for the Bushite, and Dennis Hastert quickly swears them in, even before all the votes are counted (as he did recently in the CA-50 Bilbray/Busby special election in San Diego). (This is why Hastert has been kept in place, despite every reason to dump him.) And Cheney does the same in the Senate. Bushite Senators are being quickly flown to DC and sworn in, even with votes still being counted. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid loudly object to some of these pre-vote count swearings in. Hastert & Co. just laugh in their faces. A grave government crisis is developing. The Democrats schedule a press conference to talk about it. And Bushite special ops in Iran shoot off a missile at the Eisenhower in the Persian Gulf. Gulf of Tonkin II. End of government crisis. The Democrats drop all election challenges--in a call to "pull together in this time of crisis with America under attack." And the election reform activists and groups around the country--and a few feisty candidates--are hung out to dry, in scattered individual efforts to challenge races they clearly should have won, with Howard Dean shedding some tears over them, and maybe even throwing some money their way for lawsuits. And the lawsuits begin winding their way through the courts. Some win. Some lose. All are appealed, and are headed for the Bushite-packed Supreme Court. Charges of lack of patriotism against the election challengers abound, and their efforts are marginalized in the "news."

Is this what Bush and Cheney know, and why--despite overwhelming evidence of discontent in the country, and even in their own base support--they are confidently predicting Bushite retention of Congress?

A truly depressing scenario. But bear in the mind that they DO have the power--not the right, but the POWER--to do just this. The people who own and control the TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code in all of our election systems are major Bushite fundraisers, campaign chairs and big contributors to far rightwing causes--Diebold and ES&S (and a third major election theft industry player, Sequoia). Diebold and ES&S "counted" 80% of the nation's votes in 2004, under a veil of corporate secrecy. And they have even more of a lock on our election system in 2006 (due largely to the MIND-BOGGLING SILENCE of the Democratic Party leadership on this extremely riggable election system).

And establishment whores like David Broder will play right along. 'Gee, how did that brilliant Karl Rove pull this off? Gay marriage. Brown immigrants...." Blah, blah, blah.

----------------------------

Throw Diebold, ES&S and all election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' NOW!

Bust the Machines--Vote by Absentee Ballot in November!

If everyone who despises the Bush Junta--60% to 70% of the American people--votes by Absentee Ballot next month, the reign of these diabolical machines will be OVER. Election officials cannot defend this system--and will be FORCED to reform it, or resign--if NOBODY WILL VOTE ON THEIR GODDAMNED MACHINES!

It's already happening. I just heard of another California county where 50% of the voters intend to vote by AB. Voters DO NOT TRUST these machines. Make it big! Make it an overwhelming citizen "vote of no confidence" in this system. Spread the word! (Californians have until Oct. 23 to register to vote, but have until a week before the election, Oct. 31, to obtain an Absentee Ballot. Check the rules for other states.)

administration to be castrated. I think they will help the Dems take back Congress. I think one of their motives is the 2008 elections. They feel that if this Congress and Administration combination is in place in 2008, the presidency falls to the Dems. The only way to get a decent turnout for the repubs in 2008 is two years of fresh air.

13. Simple answer? That's what ALL candidates do
Of course other factors may be included, but there never has been a candidate within 15% of their opponent who doesn't go to bed on Election Eve not having said all day that they are "confident we will win". The ones polling more than 15% behind say instead that they are "hopeful we will win". Sounding any less confident than that not only is political suicide, but it brings down the wrath of the entire rest of whatever political party they belong to, because talking like you might lose suppreses voter turn out for your side for every other race on the ballot also.

Having said that, by no means should WE be over confident. We need to build on this public perception that a Democratic victory is inevitable by working our butts off doing the detailed ground and phone work needed to generate positive results for our candidates. Doing so also makes it harder for anyone to steal this election, because everyone and their neighbor will by then know several people so discusted with the Republican Party that they switched their party vote to Democratic this year.

14. I don't know, Tom Rinaldo. I thought about that, but Bush's and
Cheney's confident predictions of a win--in the face of FALLING poll numbers, that were ALREADY very bad--sound like something else to me, either delusionary bravado, or smugness. And, given the CAPABILITY the Bushites have to steal a third election, I tend to think it's smugness. They know the fix is in at Diebold and ES&S. They did the fixing. And Diebold and ES&S will pay off with either an edge to Bushites, or a carefully crafted combo of Bushite Republicans and Bushite Democrats (like those those who voted for torture and suspension of habeas corpus the other week) that will preserve the Bush Junta majority, and also retard the election reform movement. ("Why are you still worried about Bushite corporations "counting" all the votes with "trade secret" programming? The Democrats won, didn't they?")

Also, what Bush and Cheney have said sounds different from what OTHER Republicans have said, and from all reports of what is being said privately. Even allowing for the obligation of the regime's leaders to sound optimistic, it makes me very uneasy. They should have said something, like, "Yeah, it's looking like a real horse race, but we're working hard to win votes...etc., etc." Something just a bit fudgier. Or maybe referring to traditional mid-term balancings out of power in long regimes. It is their EASY confidence that spooks me--along with my knowledge of the extremely corrupt, non-transparent voting system.

Nothing is normal about this regime, or about American politics right now--due to the non-transparency of the voting system, and the very partisan affiliations of the electronic voting corporations that are running it, under a veil of corporate secrecy. And in ADDITION to the obvious--secretly coded vote counting--there are OTHER things going on, voter purge programs and possibly strategically planned breakdowns of the machines.

8. Who is this "we"?
Are the Republicans saying it amongst themselves and foolish enough to repeat it in front of the Dean Of All Pundits, or is Broder included in their commiseration? That is, does the "we" referred to include not just the politicians but their sycophants in the Fourth Estate?

This rain could be very hard when it falls.
