Bush declares U.S. "better off" with Hastert in power. USA! USA! USA!

CHICAGO — President Bush stood shoulder-to-shoulder with embattled House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Thursday, offering a powerful boost in his moment of need and declaring the country "better off" with Hastert in power.

"I am proud to be standing with the current speaker of the House who is going to be the future speaker of the House," Bush said as he opened a speech to raise money for two Illinois congressional candidates.

The $1.1 million fundraiser provided the first picture of President Bush with Hastert since a scandal broke involving a Republican congressman pursuing underage male pages. Although the president has spoken out in Hastert's defense — tepidly at first and more directly at a White House news conference on the eve of the fundraiser — their appearance together was an endorsement of Hastert when nearly half the country says he should resign.

Their long-scheduled fundraiser was sponsored by Hastert and came on the same day that the House Ethics Committee questioned ex-Rep. Mark Foley's chief of staff, Kirk Fordham, for five hours. Fordham has said he took complaints about Foley's conduct to Hastert's top aide three or four years ago.

2. I've seen this all day. WHY is it considered such a boost for President
Bush to support him?

We've been hearing for weeks how Republicans are trying their best to distance themselves from the President.

These two ideas seem to be mutually exclusive to me.

7. Bingo...
it takes a leper to SUPPORT a leper-apologies to those with a disfiguring and crippling disease but this makes such a great simile of their moral corruption-mortification of the soul while the physical appearence remains (relatively) intact-see Dorian Gray....And what wouldn't I give to see a gay like Oscar Wilde's take on these two beasts...

10. Not just a boost, a "powerful boost"...
...on one hand, the talking heads are running down the litany of current GOP offenses. On the other, they painting a picture of the loyal and rugged Lord Bunnypants tossin' a lifeline to Coach Denny.

As the cliche goes, the inmates are running the asylum.

9. In the realclearpolitics poll
coming out today he was at 52%. He won in 2004 with 69%. If Laesch had 10% of Hastert's funds he could actually win this. Hopefully money will start pouring in here. I noticed that Kerry added him to his "October slate of veterans" just today.
Sorry I don't know how to add the link for "realclearpolitcs poll".
