My Uncle was accosted when he was a Senate page for Mike Mansfield... |
|
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 02:13 AM by Wetzelbill
I will write more about this in one of my next columns, when I get further details, but my uncle told me today that a Capitol Hill policeman approached him about sex when he was 14. The guy was a guard who protected the only way into the Atomic Energy Office. My uncle got on the elevator and the guy stops it in between floors and proceeded to "tell me what he could do for me."
My uncle then said " No thank you Sir. Could you please take me to the 3rd floor?" At which point the guard placed his hand on his gun and threatened my uncle to not say a word.
Right away he told Senator Mansfield and the FBI came in on the guy quickly. It turns out the FBI found the guy had been doing this to several other young men.
But yes, they got the guy right away. No messing around, as soon as Senator Mansfield found out the guy was done.
Now, the political situation was different, as it was not another Congressman, but the point is the GOP leadership should have taken care of this just the way Senator Mansfield did. Why? Because it isn't about politics or anything else, it is about protecting children when they are at the mercy of an adult who is in a powerful position. In this case it was a guard with a gun, more recently it was a U.S. Congressman who was the head of an important committee which was supposed to protect children from exploitation.
Anyway, I should have more details later, I just wanted to get the gist of this story out there right now.

6. What is it about the Capitol that attracts pedophiles? |
|
I know there's a certain percentage of them in any population, but it seems way out of proportion in Washington.
Almost a way of life. GOP life, that is.

7. The guy with the most high-end home security system... |
|
who is certain that the neighbors will take his stuff if he lets down his guard for one second, is the most untrustworthy guy in the neighborhood.
The people who campaign on the basis that the world's a scary place, and that predators abound, waiting to take advantage of kids and the helpless at every opportunity, often do so from personal experience.
They win by scaring people. Their frame of reference is gained from being a scary person.

9. "What is it about the Capitol that attracts pedophiles?" Power. |
|
Sexual predation is about power. So's being a member of the ruling class.

11. Perhaps OVERCOMPENSATION adds to the number. Feel bad? Act good? |
|
Ever hear of someone being "really religious?" Remember the BTK killer. President of his congregation was it. I heard of a book called: "Best Little Boy in the World" or such, about gays who compensate for feeling badly about their being gay and thus work hard to be good and to go into a professional field.
Politics is actually very respectable to ones family and friends. Bunches of people cheer you.
The priesthood was ultra respectable. Was. I bet there will be much fewer in the priesthood for many years to come. Then people will forget. They'll have an astonishing reputation. Then, ... it'll be back -- decades from now.

8. Pardon me for mentioning it |
|
I wouldn't want to appear partisan, but wasn't Senator Mansfield a Democrat?
Just mentioning.
