Collins (R-ME) to seek third term despite campaign promise not to
LEWISTON - U.S. Sen. Susan Collins confirmed Thursday that she will seek re-election in 2008.

During a meeting with the Sun Journal's editorial board, Collins said it was her intention to seek re-election despite a vow during her first campaign in 1996 to serve no more than two consecutive terms in the Senate.

"I've found that I really underestimated the importance of seniority and how much difference it makes when you are a more senior member," Collins said of her decision. "At the time, I thought that 12 years, that two terms, would be enough. This was at the height of what I would call the frenzy over term limits."

Collins is the chairman of the Senate's powerful Homeland Security Committee and also a senior member of the Armed Services Committee. She ran for governor in 1994 and was elected to the U.S. Senate for the first time in 1996.

3. Once you start feeding at the taxpayer-supported
trough, and experience the benefits and power available there, you get hooked.

And this phenomena occurs at all levels of government, big and small. The local school board where I live has members who've been sitting there for many years believing firmly in their own self-importance. One old guy was actually in a nursing home, unable to attend meetings, but ran again because he believed he owned the seat. He died a week before the election and his wife suggested that people vote for him anyway. That's the mentality that takes over after a while.

5. This sounds like another KKKarl tactic. "Forcing" her to stay on the
ticket when she wants to go home - she is being Foleytized. (Wonder what they have on her?) The repugs don't really care what she wants, they need to keep the seat and do not want to have to spend huge sums of money running an unknown.

That said, she is a repug and that is enough to want to see her gone. If she is willing to go through life with an "R" beside her name she is a lying, corrupt, enabling POS. She may be corrupt by the power and the money and want to hit the K Street trough while she can but if KKKarl says no then she stays.

I say there is more to this story.

6. I think it's more a case of "power corrupts"
She's gotten use to the glories of the Senate. Why would she want to go back to being the nothing she was before she made it to the Senate? I doubt it has anything to do with what anyone "has" over her.

She's just another Republican liar. I hope we can convince the people in Maine of this. She never should have won the last time.
