Kennedy Shines in Debates

WHITEFISH BAY, WI – 2 debates, 1 clear winner. On Wednesday and Thursday, Democrat Bryan Kennedy showed again why he is the best choice to represent the people of Wisconsin's 5th Congressional District, outshining current Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner in the only 2 scheduled debates of the election season. In both forums, Kennedy drew consistent applause for his calls for reform of the healthcare system, his proposals for immigration reform, and his bold talk about national security.

Kennedy linked Sensenbrenner's votes against affordable prescription drugs and against meaningful healthcare reform to the Congressman's immense personal investments in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Noting that Sensenbrenner's stands on issues are often determined by the corporations that contribute to his campaigns, Kennedy depicted Sensenbrenner as a key part of a “corrupt Congress” that doesn't fight for the interests of regular Americans.

Kennedy also criticized Sensenbrenner's plans on immigration. “Congressman Sensenbrenner is trying to put a band-aid on a bullet wound,” Kennedy said. Noting that building a 700-mile fence along a 2,000 mile border is not going to stop illegal immigration, Kennedy explained that Sensenbrenner and his Republican allies worked out a backroom deal which makes the fence construction unlikely. “We need comprehensive immigration reform, not election-year gimmicks,” Kennedy said. “Mr. Sensenbrenner and his allies have allowed 4 million people to enter this country illegally since 9/11. They have failed to keep us safe.”

Kennedy also questioned Mr. Sensenbrenner's approach to national security. “Where is Osama bin Laden?,” Kennedy asked. “5 years after 9/11, we still don't have the man responsible for the murder of 3,000 Americans,” he continued. “We need to follow the advice of our leading generals on the ground... and redeploy our troops to terrorist strongholds to capture and kill Osama bin Laden.”

Kennedy is running the most aggressive campaign ever against Sensenbrenner, a 28-year incumbent and career politician, in Wisconsin's 5th CD. The 5th CD includes all of Ozaukee and Washington counties, and parts of Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Jefferson counties.

2. Bryan really ran away with it last night
The moderator had to ask the audience to hold applause until the end about a dozen times, and in each instance the reason was appreciation for something Kennedy said. Sensenbrenner got nothing. When he remarked that the Middle East is safer without Saddam, he was drowned out by loud groans. At the end he vanished, while Kennedy stood around talking to audience members until the lights were turned out.

When people hear Bryan, they come to appreciate his common sense, integrity, and energy. He needs to get himself known more widely, and his planned TV ads can make that happen. If you can help in any way toward that end, here's the place to go:

6. It was quite a scene
I would estimate the crowd at more than 200. A group from Voces de la Frontera, all wearing red shirts, filled up the entire front row right in front of the candidates. (The Hispanic community is not at all happy with Sensenbrenner. I talked with one young man afterward who said "He has no idea what it's like to have to stuggle to get an education." He is a legal immigrant who has had to struggle with the system, and still he really loves this country.) There were some young people in the back taking notes (presumably high school students).

After some questions written by the sponsoring organization, they read questions from the audience. Some were quite pointed, like "What is the justification for invading Iraq and staying there?" This well-informed group also brought up issues like letting police trace guns used in crimes back to dealers, and cracking down on cock fighting (see http://sensenbrennerwatch.blogspot.com for details on why he is in trouble over these). All Sensenbrenner's answers were less than satisfying. Bryan had much better responses.

We arrived a bit late, but I heard that after the opening statements, Bryan got a sustained round of applause, while Sensenbrenner received only a couple of polite claps. All in all, it was a very uplifting night.

11. There was a poll in late August
The result then was Sensenbrenner 49, Kennedy 41. Before this year it would have been unheard-of for Sensenbrenner to fall below 50%. But he has become increasingly flaky and even many Republicans are moving away from him. He has had a number of unfortunate episodes reported since that poll (see this post for details: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=2866218 ) And Bryan Kennedy is a great candidate. So we are hopeful that you will be sharing your name with one more member of Congress before long.

10. Nice write up.
I hope that Thursdays debate and the response from those in the audience was a clear indication that Kennedy will be represeting us in Washington.

if they both win re-election?

Straightforward question.

15. Good question. I wish I knew the answer. Bryan did issue a statement...
...demanding that F. Jim come clean on what he knows about the Foley cover-up. No response, of course.

F. Jim - before he Fs you!

The only cameras there were news crews. Sadly.

20. And the news crews left after about 20 minutes
Just long enough to get a few seconds of footage, as usual.

19. Thanks for sharing Kennedy's positions. All our candidates should
adapt those nice precise answers. I think most the public would vote for any Dem with those beliefs or positions. What is there to disagree with?
