Response to Republican "Fear" ads
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 07:16 AM by bklyncowgirl
The Republicans are running an ad showing Osama Bin Laden, the World Trade Center and essentially telling voters that if they vote for anyone other than a Republican the terrorists will strike America with nuclear weapons.

Here's my suggestion for an ad the Democrats should do in response.

IMAGES: George Bush
VOICEOVER: On August 6 President George W. Bush received a warning from the Central Intelligence Agency.
IMAGE: Rice at 9/11 hearing.
RICE: "I believe that the title was Bin Laden determined to strike in the United States"

IMAGES: Bush at ranch, Bush Golfing, Bush Fishing, World Trade Center explosion. Bush reading "My Pet Goat" Firemen, people staggering in smoke, grieving families. Bin Laden smiling.
VOICEOVER: On September 11 that warning came true and America will never be the same.

IMAGES: Northern Alliance, Karzai, Tora Bora,
BUSH: "We will hunt him down dead or alive..."
TEXT: Osama Bin Laden escaped. He is believed to be living in Pakistan.
BUSH: "I really don't care about him..."
IMAGE: Bin Laden smiling.

VOICEOVER: Now American troops are fighting and dying in Iraq.
IMAGES: Saddam statue falling, Mission Accomplished, looting, violence. Rumsfeld.
TEXT: Looting sectarian violence No law and order
RUMSFELD: "Looting is what happens in a free society...." (I know I got the quote wrong"

VOICEOVER: Nine Billion dollars of money for reconstruction is unaccounted for.
IMAGES: Broken buildings, angry people, Halliburton, explosions, burned out vehicles, mourning families, Cheney, more explosions, mosque on fire. Bush.
CHENEY: "I think that when you look a the big picture things are going rather well in Iraq."

VOICEOVER: 2700 American Troops have been killed. Thousands more have been wounded.
IMAGES: Baghdad burning, flag draped coffins,
RUMSFELD: "Stuff Happens"

IMAGES: Bush, US container port, Iranian President, FEMA in New Orleans, North Koren President, mushroom cloud, Illegal Immigrants slipping across boarder, Nuclear plant, sports stadium. Bush giving the German Prez a shoulder rub.

IMAGE: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice

TEXT: DO YOU FEEL SAFE?

In small letters "Paid for by the Democratic National Committee.

2. Did you see the ad where people are
asking questions like "why are are soldiers dying in Iraq" and "why dont they raise the minimum wage" to a SHRUB! This voice comes on and says something to the effect of "You cant get answers out of this bush, What makes you think you'll get answers from this one" and there is Dubya! It was on CNN during Jack Cafferty's special broken government thursday nite, I about peed myself as I choked on my dinner.

5. some ideas from Old Europe
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 07:42 AM by tocqueville
#1 : the main line of attack against the "fear ads" must be to paint the Repubs as COWARDS, which they are. Show pictures of Brits, Spaniards, 9/11 victims acting with dignity and proposing the right countermeasures after the attacks. Show a picture of a Repub leaving a wet spot after him after a Bin Laden tape on TV. Explain that FEAR is the victory of the enemy : "ARE YOU AFRAID ? THE TERRORISTS HAVE WON !"

#2. Ads are expensive. So use a few, but very good ones. The DEMs force should not be in expensive countermeasures but by using the money to organize local organizations that can go door to door and recruit neighbourhood committees and organize "welfare" for those who need it. Learn from resistance movements abroad.
BTW it's exactly what's the GOP is doing at least to some extent: they use their large funds to contract people that go door to door. The DEMs could do it much netter and thus create a persistent network. Take over the local structures. Create logistics.

That's the best way to ensure that a coup like the two latest elections can't happen again.

6. Your approach is the right one.
I think it was Vince McMahon who said, "Don't say so much. If you give them too much to remember they'll never remember any of it."

That's true with political ads too. Focus on a single message and then hit it out of the park.

7. Digby (or was it Atrios) had a similar idea--
basically to use the same images but with a different voiceover, about how Bush et al let bin Ladin escape, then attacked the wrong country, then turned it into a haven for terrorists. The punchline would be "Heckuva job, George."

Also, one small addendum: US kia in Iraq are now over 3000.
