GOP: "The only thing we have is fear itself."
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 09:44 AM by Richardo
Here's a short piece I posted on a RW blog. Comments welcome.

Forbes.com: GOP to Air Ad Warning of Terror Attacks

Forbes.com posts this article from the AP delineating the GOP's pre-election strategy for the next few weeks. Playing to their ever weakening stong hand, the GOPs will demonstrate how they are the right and obvious choice to continue running the country, by reminding us that (those with heart conditions may want to quit reading here) there are terrorists out there.

As Groucho once said: "BOOGA BOOGA!!" Except instead of Groucho, the GOP is reprising bizarro-spokesperson Osama bin Laden's 2004 election-time vamp, once again going over his litany of threats to kill us all, just in case we forgot.

I don't know about this strategy, Mehlman: Parading the very symbol of your total failure to secure this country, in an attempt to convince us that you're the best ones to secure the country. Not sure that's really going to work this time.

5. I should go post that on stampandshout.com - thanks for the idea, CQG
:hi:

I'm in the middle of Connelly's new one ("Echo Park"). Excellent as always.

Also fininshed 'Blind into Baghdad' a collection of Atlantic Monthly articles beginning in 2002(!) about the failures in planning for Iraq. Excellent. Author's name escaping me right now.

2. Truer words have never been written on DU.
Unfortunately, the nation is going into terror fatigue. My hope is living with the terror fear becomes one of those things that we accept as just being out there. At that point we can get rational about our policy against it.

3. GOP to offer new last line to Star Spangled Banner
"O'er the land of the less free and the home of the fearful?"

4. Bingo.
"Parading the very symbol of your total failure to secure this country, in an attempt to convince us that you're the best ones to secure the country."

I've never understood why more people don't see that. "We screwed up, but that's all the more reason to vote for us!" Apparently as long as you seem tough on national security, no one really cares about the results. Like Bill Clinton said at the 04 DNC, the American people would rather have a president who is strong and wrong than a president who is weak and right.

"Not sure that's really going to work this time."

I'd love to give the American public the benefit of the doubt, but never underestimate the power of fear. It can convince people in rural Nebraska that terrorists are out to attack their cornfields.

8. I hate to say it, but the "terra" crap is still working.
This morning I was talking to an aquaintance about her recent trip to Scotland and she made a point of mentioning she took Icelandic Air because it isn't a terrorist target. Later in the conversation I mentioned something about habeas corpus and got the deer in headlights look. Lights are on, nobody's home.
