That ad was so powerful. Sadly, you always have these damn freeps who comment with hateful stuff. Even in this case. They have no shame.

The only Missourians who pronounce it that way think every sperm is sacred and Hollywood is evil; they won't be swayed.
Sorry, my St. Louis bias is showing. It's still a moving and courageous ad; I had no idea his Parkinson's was so advanced now.

My mother was a "Missour-ahn". She'd have been absolutely horrified at this religious nuttery, and would have been completely receptive to the ad. Although, she'd have voted for Claire anyway. Those are the folks we need to reach, this ad will make them think about medical science and their own families. It only takes a few votes to move an election.

I was born in Kansas City, Missouri and I have always said and have always heard locals say "Missour-a". It is a western Missouri thing. Harry Truman said "Missour-a", and that is a pretty good authority. What with him being a Democratic hero and all that.
What DOES make me crazy about speech in western Missouri is "warsh" and "Warshington" for "wash" and "Washington."
But I get along with "Missour-a" just fine.
Only those snooty St. Louisans, thinking they are better than us in KC and putting on airs, say "Missour-ee". lol
Let's find something useful to fight over, shall we?
Michael J. Fox's appearance in that ad is a powerful indictment of the Republican stand on stem-cell research. Michael, you are one of my heroes!

But if you say "my am ee" a lot of people go batshit nuts. Apparently the PC way is "my am UH". I think the whole goddamn 'controversy' is idiotic and only shows how anal some Okies can be. When I say the name I split the difference and say "mee AM ee" which pisses off pretty much everyone, as intended.

In my experience, the people from MO say it Missourah.
I was born there but grew up in the KC suburbs on the Kansas side and in Iowa. We always gave my parents a hard time for saying Missourah instead of Missouri BUT everyone who lived and grew up there said it that way - my extended family and their friends, etc.
I suppose the Missourians I know are mostly from Western MO (St. Joseph and KC) although many have lived or still live in St. Louie.
They also said warsh instead of wash.

Read "Lucky Man", his BIO.
He's seriously afflicted but controlling nicely with meds. It's probable that he didn't take his meds before shooting the commercial as he did before his congressional appearance. His book details how he didn't take his meds to show the congress the true nature of the disease. It's a powerful ad, but I find it a bit disingenuous.

I keep hearing Nussle and other Republican ads during IOWA football games including ones from popular ex-coaches (Hayden Fry, Dan Gable).
Grrrrrrrr.
Walking through the grocery store with the game playing over the intercom (they always do that) and a commercial comes on with Hayden Fry endorsing Nussle.

19. the commercial gets air time in Kansas too |
|
I'm about 40 miles from the Missouri border, in a community halfway between KCK/KCMO and Topeka, and I'll see the commerical on television. Half of the local channels provided by our cable company come from the KC metro area and the other half come from Topeka. This means that the ad has the potential of helping Dems in both states. Not that the Dems need much of a boost here in Kansas. Our Democratic governor is on her way to re-elected (with positives in the high 60 percentile), in the past week two former Republican AGs have endorsed the Democratic AG candidate (and both of them accused the current Republican AG of misusing his office) and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I've personally delivered signs, bumperstickers and other campaign materials for Nancy Bodya, the Democratic candidate in the 2 CD (I live in the 3rd), to some very red areas of the state. Places where, until this cycle, we had trouble finding a toehold in. Right now, in Jefferson County, Kansas there are more Democratic signs than I have ever seen before.
If anything, this commercial needs to be sent to people in other states too. We'll see this commerical in our area. People are already talking about it and the word is getting out about it. What would be helpful is if other people realized that stem cell research is something that other senators and congresspeople will be voting on too. Send the commercial to everyone in other states. They need to be reminded that there is a lot at stake in this election other than the so-called war on terror.

Diseases that could benefit from stem cell research are numerous. People who have family members that are being denied the possibility of cures or improvement of their conditions are being held hostage by the RW'ers who are pandering to a certain segment of the constitutency. This commercial has an impact far beyond Missouri (and Kansas) and people all over need to be reminded of that fact.
One of the things I personally like about the commercial is Michael J. Fox. Many people remember him as the character Michael Keaton, a conservative son of liberal parents. His character still resonates and implants the message that even a Reagan-type prefers the Democratic candidate over a real Republican.

One ad I'm disgusted with is one that the National Association of Realtors is running for Jim Talent.
By the way, I just got a notice in the mail from the Missouri Real Estate Commission that I'm going to be audited. Here I am, a little old real estate broker since 1974, trying to make an honest dollar; and they're going to audit my little 12 x 12 real estate office? I think they're going over the voter registration records, because they said these audits are computer generated...I can't wait for them to get here, they'll sure get the surprise of their life when they see my meager existence.
They're backing several republican candidates. I'm not happy about the fact they're taking the money that I pay for my license (and my husband's; and they probably get a cut from the continuing education courses we pay so dearly for, then give the money to Jim Talent! I wouldn't vote for him under any circumstances. :grr:
