The Incomparable Judy Steinberg Dean
The Incomparable Judy Steinberg Dean

By Mary Lynn Jones, AlterNet
December 26, 2003

Meet Dr. Judith Steinberg Dean, career woman. Busy balancing her own thriving medical practice and raising her two children, she keeps up with what her husband does at work, but it is not her main priority. And the fact that her husband is the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination isn't going to change that.

Judy Dean is a historical anomaly among political wives – the stand-by-your-man spouses who drop their own careers at the first whiff of a presidential run and devote themselves solely to their husband's election. She has instead opted to continue seeing patients who, as she put it in a recent fundraising letter, "want and need to see a physician who knows them when they're ill."

"She's definitely a trendsetter in choosing her role, which is exactly what the women's community has been talking about for a very long time," said Roselyn O'Connell, president of the National Women's Political Caucus.

While the Dean phenomenon may be new in presidential campaigns, it is merely the most public manifestation of the transformation of the institution of marriage that has created greater acceptance for women's careers. A majority of married women and mothers in America now work, as families increasingly need two incomes to stay afloat. This shift in demographics may in turn have created greater acceptance for the idea of a working First Lady.

2. I admire this as a feminist

3. Woah!
First, Judy Disney marries comedian David Steinberg, becoming Judy Steinberg.

Then, she divorces David Steinberg and marries Watergate conspirator John Dean, becoming Judy Steinberg Dean?

She didn't even mention going to medical school!

Woah!

4. Pretty scary! We can't possibly win with a candidate that
doesn't expect his wife to follow him around, stare at him with adoring eyes, make inane statements about children, and act like a bobblehead dummy every time he utters a word.

How can we support a candidate who doesn't believe in "Traditional Family Values". The voters will be outraged that Dr. Dean actually treats his wife like she has brains and a life that is not primarily devoted to his career. And, I heard that he actually respects her!!

What's next? They'll be telling us that it's OK for women to walk around without a Burqa and learn to read!!

10. I guess she doesn't live up to the Laura Bush example of good motherhood
I mean, she raised two underage alcoholics.

And look at Babs-she raised a bunch of liars, thieves, and one dimwit.

Now there are two examples of good parents!

14. Yup, but look at what Bab's sons have done to this country
and it's a lot worse than juvenile indiscretion.

I was just making a point that Laura stayed at home and the Bush girls managed to get into trouble. Again, juvenile indiscretion.

Why are you here?

maybe her son wouldn't have gotten in trouble, you judgemental ass.

29. Dean took them to work with him a lot
And he drove them to school every day while he was governor. I've read stories about Anne sitting at his feet while he spoke publicly, coloring. I think it's adorable.

9. And what's the problem with daycare?
I raised a pretty good kid using good daycare. Many people have. Don't tell me that this is going to be the knock on Ms. Dean. Haven't you got anything better?

13. Do you think that this
thread is a place to hold forth on child-raising issues? You won't find a lot of sympathy here for your views.

It's about choice - if she chose to stay home to raise their children, I would probably applaud that too.

15. I believe
that if a woman has a brain and wants to exercise it as well as raise good offspring, she can do well with good daycare and she will probably bring more to her children. There are millions and millions of great people in this world who had some daycare in their lives. Many of these folks had or have no choice, they have to work. But for the women who don't have to work but chose to, maybe their husbands should stay home. This is such an old red herring. If this is all you've got, it's not enough. I'd put Judy Dean up against Laura Bush any day.

does that include access to medical care for children when they are ill?

27. a funny thing happened on the way to the forum
google scientologist and daycare. Carole, Kristina, Wendi, Lisa, Arlene, Carl, Gloria et.al, all good scientologists I'm sure, have a different perspective on daycare.

A little more about them:

a little more "about myself". I post these links not to advance the cause of scientology, but to point out the obvious grasping-at-straws method of your argument.

19. I beleive two generation of Bushes would have benefited from daycare
Barbara and George the older raised some rotten kids. Poppy's drug addiction (haldol) and Babs rage-aholic behavior were clearly bad examples for their criminal brood. Now the next generation, George, Jebby, Bucky and Skippy are ruining a whole new generation of drunken, drug addicted losers. Of course those kids will inherit millions and will never have to actually do something useful to prove their worth.

Gosh I miss Chelsea. What a great kid the Clinton's turned out eh?

24. Hey Kheph...this is a good article
sorry that the thread disintegrated into some weird Dr. Laura segment.

Judy Dean would make an excellent First Lady, and provide a terrific example to young women.

26. I second that Kef!
How did this become a commentary on daycare? I'll tell you how: it's the red herring. The red herring was what the english fox hunters used to throw down on the trail to derail the foxes. Get them all off on the wrong track. There are alot of red herrings posting on DU these days. From now on, when I think I see one I'm going to yell. Red Herring Alert!

30. It Is Fascinating To Compare "First Ladies"
It does bring up issues concerning Family Life and how it's structured.

I am sure Judy would make her own significant contribution to the tradition if Dean wins the nomination & Presidency.
