VFW endorses Lampson in District 22 race

Associated Press

snip//

Democrats have generally said the Bush administration needs to set a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops, prompting charges that Democrats want to "cut and run" from the fight. Republican candidates have generally said U.S. troops should remain until the war is won.

The Iraq war has become a key issue nationally in congressional elections and growing opposition to it could help Democrats gain enough seats to win control of the House.

Lampson's staff has been touting his VFW endorsement and the endorsement of the National Rifle Association to show that the former congressman is a moderate to conservative Democrat in line with voters in this conservative Republican district.

Republican write-in candidate Shelley Sekula-Gibbs doesn't detail her stand on the war, except to say that she supports the president's war on terror and opposes an early withdrawal.

Sekula-Gibbs is struggling to gain a foothold in the staunchly Republican district once represented by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay because of her late entry, write-in status and a shortage of campaign cash.

4. Why do the VFW and NRA hate America?
Didn't they see Santorum's latest ad? Nazis, bitches! If the Democrats get in, the Nazis will be right back, only this time Hitler isn't going after the cheese-eating surrender monkeys in Paris, it's gonna be Washington!

What is the matter with the VFW and the NRA? Don't they see how slim a reed is protecting us from the Nazis?

12. Um, the NRA endorses Dems all the time
At least here in Texas they do.

Lampson isn't perfect by any means, but he's a good guy and a great voice for labor, minorities and most women's issues. He used to be the local Congresscritter until re-re-districting took him out. :(

Oh, and, Jack Brooks, the other guy who represented SE Texas for about 40 years was also endorsed by the NRA, as was Charlie Wilson who represented SE to East Texas. And Ivins described Wilson as the best feminist the Dems had in Congress.

Which is why I just don't get all the anti-NRA stuff on DU sometimes. The NRA isn't great by any means, and LaPierre has tried to turn it into a complete republican lobbying group, but he hasn't yet succeeded. The NRA isn't great, but it also isn't the (complete) political boogey man that it's made out to be.
