Dead Elephant.Org--instant bumper-strip campaign
Check this out:
Dead Elephant.org

I take no responsibility or blame for this site. Someone told me about it and I thought it might interest some folks here.

Note: No elephants were killed in the creation of the site or the bumper-strips, as far as I can tell.

I've printed off several, and I'll pass them out at our weekly anti-war protest tomorrow.

Power to the people,

5. Anybody know what you buy to make bumper stickers from your printer?
What kind of paper, I mean. Is there a bumper sticker stock? And is it the kind you have to take off with a razor blade? I'm probably being dumb and lazy, Sorry — it's the middle of the night.

These are SO GREAT! George Lakoff would be so proud!

6. You can just use paper and tape them onto
the inside of your window.

Or else go to your office-and-bumper supply store and ask.

25. Or make a plastic sleeveout of report covers
Just slide the new ones in after the old ones are outl I have two on my back window because I have so many bumperstickers it would be silly to put them all on my bumper.

8. I have researched crack-and-peel paper & it is expensive
if you google terms like "bumpersticker paper" (no quotes) you will find a very few that offer crack & peel vinyl and/or paper "for bumperstickers"--but it ain't cheap, has to be bought in large quantities, and has to be cut down to size. Another idea is to try to find magnetic sheets (I've heard that Michaels has them but have never really looked there), use regular paper to print out the stickers, then glue them to the magnetic sheets. The beauty of this is that you can take the bumperstickers off your car when appropriate.

14. Yes, there's bumper sticker paper
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 09:55 AM by OnionPatch
at any of the Office stores: Office Depot, Office Max, etc. I buy it all the time. It is a little pricy, about 15 bucks for a packet but you can get about twenty stickers from it. (Edited to add; I just checked and it's actually 14 in the packet I got.) That's actually cheaper than buying them already printed. It's not that shiny stuff, so it doesn't last as long but it does hold up in the rain for awhile. I've been buying the laminate sheets that you can stick over them. You get it at the same place, right next to the bumper sticker paper.

28. You can buy glossy printed stickers from our non-profit store
There's a link to the "web-store" on the main navigation of DeadElephant.ORG. Pay 3 bucks with a credit card (our cost) and they come by mail in a few days. Have to hurry to get them that way before Election Day!

Or you can buy full-sheet magnetic paper, and full-sheet peel-off sticky paper, at any OfficeMax, or Staples, etc. They can be run through your printer, just like printing labels.

But printing them yourself on plain paper, and using tape, works GREAT. On the outside, on the bumper, looks much brighter than behind a window. My car went though a car wash with them yesterday and the strips on the bumper came out fine. Besides, if they get messed up, they're free, so print some more!

enjoy!

29. George Lakoff's "Whose Freedom" was a key inspiration

wow. That was a good call. George Lakoff's "Whose Freedom" was the key inspiration for the entire "Freedom" series. If anyone knows how to get a hold of George, we'd really like for him to see this campaign - the fruits of his brilliance.

9. Agreed, these are very cool!
Actually, this campaign has been showing up in several spots
this week. It's all over MySpace, and I saw it on Digg, and
on the Huffington Post Contageous Festival. The time is
exactly right for something like this - I mean, like, this
week!

11. Here's another idea
Ask your local GOP office for their elephant sticker and paste it upside down, that way you're not vioating any copyright of theirs.

26. This string has bumped-up campaign traffic - THANKS
Wow. The enthusiasm here is much appreciated! Thank you. We found this string because has it generated a discernable increase in our traffic.

Visits to DeadElephant.ORG, and downloads, are increasing dramatically as the contagion begins to “take”. What DeadElephant.ORG needs right now are posts to BoingBoing, Slash.dot, Digg, News.Netscape.com, Shoutwire, MySpace (which, by-the-way, has already become VERY active in the campaign), FaceBook, elsewhere on Democratic Underground… In fact - everywhere.

Most important is to put the DeadElephant.ORG campaign in front of high-visibility bloggers, and radio personalities. It would be ideally suited for Randi Rhodes, Al Franken, Arianna Huffington, Bernie Ward, etc.

Thanks everyone!

27. Thanks for telling us! I want to use this example to illustrate an important point:
I don't know how many people are involved in the deadelephant.org site. I'm the one who started this thread. I heard about it because a friend who is very disabled and unable to do much activism herself told me about it. As a result of her bothering to tell me (one person taking one small action), thousands more people will join in this effort. And who knows where that may lead.

The call I got was from the same person who first alerted me to the important work of Dr. Richard Hayes Phillips, who was at the time working alone to analyze precinct-level results of the Ohio 2004 election. I joined him, pulled together a team, and our work ended up providing the statistical basis for the Moss v. Bush case in the Ohio State Supreme Court, being entered into the Congressional Record at Rep. John Conyers's hearings, becoming a part of the basis for RFK Jr's first Rolling Stone article, and more.

Do the little things. They can make more difference than you'll likely ever know. Do the big ones if you can, of course.

30. As the little old man pissing in the sea said
"Every little bit helps."

home made 10X3 stickers.

Add color using you own image editor. Lots of good free ones out there like GIMP.

Make your own with GIMP, or my favorite Inkscape. Both have a geeky interface, but it takes a few hours of playing around to become proficient enough for simple propaganda posters and sticker.

32. You are welcome to use the DeadElephant as avatar!
To post any avatar you first need to be a donating member of DU (minimum $10). Then you will need to get the avatar image - That part is easy: just right-click our tiny avatar on this posting, and save the image to your hard-drive. Then, upload that image from within your "edit-profile" page. The last step is to enter the link to your new avatar, which DU will provide to you, into the form field in which you specify the avatar you wish to use. DONE!

You will find a code snippet to insert the DeadElephant.ORG web-badge into any HTML page, including blogs, bulletins, etc. You can insert it into your DU signature if you wish. It looks like this:
