Rasmussen: Kean 43% Menendez 41%

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/October%202006/newJerseySenate1025.htm

As a resident of New Jersey this concerns me, because there is always a contingent of voters who wait until the last minute to decide, and anything can happen in the next nine days. There is no way this race should even be close that we would have to worry about it. Menendez has served in the House for years and been elected over and over again. NJ is a deep blue state, and yet Kean is still holding his own.

It is so disheartening, especially after Menendez was one of the twelve Democrats to vote for the torture bill. I don't know if that has anything to do with these numbers or how many NJ residents even know that, or how accurate they are. However, I do know that if I had the choice, Richard Codey would have been the man going for the Senate seat.

I believe Menendez was simply a political machine choice, and once again I have to go and vote and hold my nose for someone I didn't vote in a primary for. What do I have to be excited about in this campaign that has been absolutely negative and nasty on both sides? I have not seen one commercial where either of these candidates has actually talked about what they are going to do in the future. It has only been mudslinging and accusations. Again, I will vote on November 7 because it is my duty, but I am disappointed to see this race so close and the same political tactics deployed on all sides that don't give me hope.

4. Is that a six point lead without a margin of error?
Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 04:31 PM by RestoreGore
This article also stated in the headline that it is Kean NJ trusts? WT? I suppose the ads regarding Menendez's ethics are working. Remember, that was a lynchpin in Corzine's campaign... rooting out corruption. Now all we see are ads talking about Menendez and his alleged ethics lapses (and Corzine picked him to replace him)and considering he is a Hudson County Democrat, I even wondered at one point about it.

2. Another poll out today shows Menendez with a six point edge.

This race will be a tough one but it should remain blue in the end. Pre-election polls routinely underestimate Dem support in NJ. Remember, in '04 they actually thought it might be in play.

3. I'm no pollster but friends in NJ tell me this afternoon that Menendez
will hold that seat.

What they hear is that people in New Jersey liked the old man but sonny boy just isn't closing the deal.

Governor Corzine is no slouch at getting people to the polls, either.

I'm optimistic on this one.

5. "Vote Against BUSH, Vote Democratic"
One Freeper posted that people in his neighborhood are putting up those signs on all the electric poles. "Disgusting", as he said.

17. yes
Rt. 21 on the way to the airport is covered with signs that have that message.

I read the article that jefferson_dem posted above. It makes me sick that Kean's slime ads have made voters distrust Menendez. The real estate deal they are pointing at was cleared with the HOUSE ETHICS COMMITTEE. It nauseates me that a good man like Menendez would be subject to these republican sleazoid tricks:

But among those who said their vote was swayed by the depictions in the ads of Menendez as corrupt and Kean as a rubber stamp, slightly more said they were inclined to vote against Menendez than against Kean.

Well, I am doing my best to eduate people about their tactics. Tomorrow I am having students analyze political ads in the context of communication theory (in particular, Petty/Caccioppo's Elaboration Likelihood Model).

6. This fellow NJ resident agrees with your assesement.....
I wanted Codey to get the seat. He would have trounced Kean handily. I don't dislike Menendez but after the torture vote I like him much less. Still voting for him though. I just think he was the wrong choice for the seat and that Codey would not have had nearly the troubles winning this that Menendez may have.

And that would have been something very positive in his favor. But I guess he doesn't play the game?

8. Hi, vi5. Is Frank Lautenberg stepping down this next election cycle?
And has Codey been mentioned for that race?

9. His term is up in 2008
I wouldn't mind seeing Richard Codey run for his seat. Especially since he voted for the torture bill too, which absolutely stunned me.

10. Maybe he will make a run for it.
We need to keep electing strong people from New England and the mid-Atlantic states. They're our stronghold.

14. Iwonder if Menendez would be in trouble if he had come out clearly against
the torture bill? The Democratic party has to stand for something if we want to win this election or any other.

16. I 'm less concerned
with 43/41, that means that only 84 % are saying who they are voting for. People try to answer to please the pollster. Given the campaign, which candidate is it that people may feel they shouldn't respond? 16% not answering a candidate a week and a half before is unusual - I suspect these are Democrats reluctant to say Menendez - because the entire Republican campaign is that he is a crook.

What I wrote may be nonsense - but remember the Corzine numbers, he was well ahead, then after the garbage from his ex-wife, it became close in the polls right before the election. He ended up winning by 12 points.
