Lamont asks Lieberman to join debate
Lamont asks Lieberman to join debate

NEW LONDON -- Ned Lamont said Tuesday he hopes U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman will change his mind and participate in Thursday's televised debate with him and Republican challenger Alan Schlesinger.

"I think people are tired of the 30-second commercials and the mailings, and I think people want to see the candidates debate the issues, so I am hoping that he decides to be there," said Lamont, the Democratic nominee in the five-way contest for U.S. Senate.

Lamont and Schlesinger have agreed to a fourth debate, a one-hour televised forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at Quinnipiac University. As of Friday, the Lieberman campaign said the incumbent, running as an independent, would not participate.

1. More exposure for Schlesinger is good news. It will help erode Joe's base.
First-past-the-post voting only requires a plurality, not a majority. If more and more of Joe's base can be convinced to vote for Schlesinger, then that's good news for Lamont.

3. Good...hopefully Lieberman won't debate. Let it be a race...
between Lamont and Schlesinger. Naturally that's what Lamont is hoping for. The public pressure for Lieberman to participate is just to make Lieberman look terrible when he says "No" and grants legitimacy to the debate because Lieberman had been invited pushed to participate.

It'll play into the idea that Lieberman is no longer truly representative of his constituents and no longer accountable to them.

That race is going to be a statistical dead heat before the election.

4. Is Pettycash Junction Joe still defying federal election law...
...by refusing to open the books on the missing $380,000+ spent on "volunteers" over a 12-day period?

OPEN THE BOOKS, JOE!

5. They should put an empty chair
where Lieberman would be. Like they did to Joe McCarthy. Or an empty podium, in this case. Remind everyone that this Joe, too, is too COWARDLY to debate, after he got creamed in the last two.
