It backfired
The GOP lied about Kerry... and the Democrats gained ground. Independents are getting fed up with the scare tactics and the lies.

2. I don't think it backfired. I think it had little to no effect.
I think that people tried to think of what the furor had to do with their state or Cong election, decided it was nothing, and moved on.

4. Backfiring by exposing the corporate media and some unprincipled Dems as
perfectly willing to further the lies of BushInc for a paycheck or a selfish opportunity.

5. i think this played right into the disgust americans have for repugs
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 11:09 AM by seabeyond
right now. this is exactly why they are disgusted with repugs. they got the people emotionally wrapped up into this only for people to find out they were lied to

made to look like fools AGAIN. IF a party EVER did this to me, made me buy into a lie, i would be pissed too

6. it's disgusting for everyone but their base
That's Rove--play to the base and never mind everyone else. That's got them this far--but I think it's gone as far as it can go. People see them more clearly now and their base is eroding. You can only fool people for so long. Now only 29% of people approve of Bush's Iraq policy.

18. Bingo
This past week I watched the documentary "So Goes the Nation" and it's about Ohio and their role in the 2004 election and they had people from both sides in the film and the republicans pointed out that they were very into firing their base instead of doing like the democrats and going to new people so it's definitely something they do and in a lot of Bush's speeches he likes to put key phrases in that his fundie voter base would recognize and speak to them.

7. These polls were conducted October 24th-30th.
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 11:20 AM by TheVirginian
And these polls are about consistent with previous polling on these races, except for the size of Menendez's lead and the size of Corker's lead. It has absolutely nothing to do with John Kerry. It is literally impossible for these polling results to have less to do with John Kerry.

8. It really had no effect
This late in the campaign, they were looking out for any molehill to make into a mountain. They can scream from the rooftops all they want but the American people just do not see this as a big deal.

11. Small disparity
I don't know why, but they list two different dates:

http://elections.us.reuters.com/top/news/usnN01191080.html

"The polls of at least 600 likely voters in each state were taken between Oct. 24 and 31 in 10 of the country's most competitive Senate races."

http://elections.us.reuters.com/top/news/usnN01194336.html

"The polls of at least 600 likely voters in each state, taken Oct. 24 to Oct. 30, have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points."

I don't know which one is accurate; although, both prove that this has nothing to do with John Kerry.

15. Right.
What I've read is that the polling which comes out later from Tues/Weds will be the "best case scenario" for Republicans due to the faux Kerry insult/news cycle.

10. I think voters didn't care.
They maybe thought that the junior Senator from Massachusetts was a tool, but that didn't change their disgust at the Republicans and the war in Iraq.

It made me donate more money ro Dems. Wasn't going too, but it made me angry.

14. you can't really blame the GOPers
they can't run on the economy - because it sucks for 90% of us

they can't run on Iraq - because Frist told them not too, and it's a fiasco of the nth magnitude

they can't run on security - because that brings up illegal immigration

they can't run on terror - because that drags Iraq back into it, and the nasty "where's bin-laden question"

they can't run on fiscal discipline - because they don't have any

FEAR isn't working, and the SMEAR effect is getting boring...

so what do the GOPers have left? They have Jokes! Vote GOP - they have better JOKES.

For the remaining 5 days - the republican campaigns will be JOKES!

And Wow is all i can say. Keith is so on the money with these comments, it's scary.

I couldn't help laughing when he talked about Stephanie Miller, as she's had this huge crush on him, and keeps saying that he probably doesn't know that she exists. Well, I guess the death threat got her on his map

Reminding them of of Bush v Kerry automatically boost the Dem vote.
But this poll would not show that since it covered Oct 24-Nov 1

23. This election is a referendum on George Bush...
they can try to lie and deflect, but ultimately, it's all about Bush and Iraq. The majority of the country has no confidence in him anymore, and no confidence in a GOP Congress being able to break his will.

26. I think Kerry's strong response neutralized whatever bounce they
would have gotten. Hopefully the Dems will learn from this: Respond to GOP bullshit immediately, forcefully, with language making it clear how ridiculous their attacks are. No more "golly gee we support the troops too! sniff!" Call them cowards, call them liars.

27. I agree. Though yesterday was very depressing. Hope it means
Democrats will be doubly sure they don't make any mistakes this week. That they read off teleprompters. That they vet every word to make sure they do or say nothing that can be whirly birded into a mess the GOP will run with.
