Major Right-Wing Fundie Accused of 3-year Fling with Male Prostitute
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 02:36 PM by AtomicKitten
REPORT: Major Right-Wing Evangelical Leader Accused Of 3-Year Relationship With Male Prostitute

from http://thinkprogress.org/

A male prostitute alleges that he had a three-year relationship with prominent right-wing evangelical leader Ted Haggard, who has said that homosexuality is a “sin” and “devastating for the children of our nation and for the future of Western civilization.” Haggard denies the allegation.

Haggard is president of the National Association of Evangelicals, representing more than 30 million conservative Christians. Time Magazine ranked him as one of the 25 most influential evangelicals and Harper’s contributing editor Jeff Sharlet noted, “No pastor in America holds more sway over the political direction of evangelicalism than does Pastor Ted.”

Every Monday, Haggard participates in a conference call with members of the Bush administration. He has stated, “I’m a right-wing religious conservative. … I joke that the only disagreement I have with George Bush is on what type of truck to drive.”

Haggard’s accuser, Mike Jones, says “he has recorded voicemails and a letter from Haggard, and that he had also witnessed Haggard use methamphetamine.”

from http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/11/president-of-national-association-of.html

UPDATE: This guy is reportedly as important as James Dobson:

The press tends to regard Dobson as the most powerful evangelical Christian in America, but Pastor Ted is at least his equal.

UPDATE: Here is how big this story is.

Christian evangelical leader Ted Haggard... one of the nation's most influential evangelical Christians, whose overstuffed agenda includes a weekly conference call to the White House.

He also claims to have direct access to George Bush:

"We have direct access," says Mr. Haggard, senior pastor of the giant New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. "I can call , he'll take my concern to the president and get back to me in 24 hours."

And he's virulently anti-gay.
This guy was on TIME's list of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America. It doesn't get any bigger than this. And he's from Colorado. Wonder what Marilyn Musgrave has to say about this?

From 9News in Denver:

A gay man and admitted male escort claims he has had an ongoing sexual relationship with a well-known Evangelical pastor from Colorado Springs.

Mike Jones told '9 Wants to Know' Investigative Reporter Paula Woodward he has had a "sexual business" relationship with Pastor Ted Haggard for the past three years.

Haggard is the founder and senior leader of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. The church has 14,000 members.

He is also president of the National Association of Evangelicals, an organization that represents millions of people.

Haggard is married with five children and an outspoken critic of gay marriage....

Jones started talking to 9 Wants to Know two months ago. He claims Haggard has been paying him for sex over the past three years, even though Haggard preaches that homosexuality is a sin.

Jones also claims Haggard used methamphetamine in his presence on several occasions....

Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw profiled Haggard in 2005 in a series on mega-churches. Haggard was also listed by Time magazine as one of the 25 most influential Evangelicals in America last year.

2. I knew something was 'not right' about Haggard the first time
I saw him on TV. Hypocrisy seems to be pretty typical of these evangelical power players.

10. It's only the Christofascists with the double standards that
we don't care for. We don't have any problem with True Christians.

But I suspect you knew that.

6. I love it when this stuff happens!
I remember when the conservative Xtians would more or less stay away from politics. They still subscribed to the "render to Caesar, render to God" philosophy -- chose to live their faith quietly with others of the same beliefs, letting the secular world go to hell on its own.

Then the dominionists and political powermongers gained influence, and got them all militant and riled up to make the U.S. a Xtian theocracy.

I hope they're seeing now what a really bad idea that was and go back to the way they used to live, staying home and living their faith, not trying to bring all of society under the influence of their so-called "Christian" leaders.

"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians, they are so unlike your Christ."
-Ghandi

7. I love "the google".
Earlier today I googled "tulsa - minister - Haggard" (he went to Oral Roberts) found a really nice feature story on Rev. Haggard. The article said he was camping/fasting in the Rockies went he had a vision of "a stadium full of men".

I think the Rev misinterpreted his vision. He thought it meant he should start a church ministry when it really meant he should move to San Francisco.
