strib LTTE: Bachmann's church
Bachmann's church

A timely revelation

I read with great interest the Oct. 28 Blog House that reported that Sixth District U.S. House candidate Michele Bachmann worships at a church affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, which "regards the Roman Catholic papacy as the antichrist."

I then watched the Sixth District candidates' debate Saturday evening and heard Bachmann say, when questioned about the Star Tribune item, "my church does not believe that the pope is the antichrist" and "that's absolutely false."

Being a voter in the Sixth District with two children enrolled in Catholic school, my curiosity got the better of me so I did some research by visiting the WELS homepage. I was surprised to find that one of the WELS core doctrines does indeed regard the Roman Catholic papacy as the antichrist.

I am thankful for hearing this before casting my vote and know, as a Catholic in the Sixth District, I will not be voting for Michele Bachmann.

2. The WELS is the lunatic fringe of the Lutheran tradition
They think all Lutherans but them are seriously compromised. I read their Q&A section on the web, and they even told a young man whose best friend was getting married in a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (second-craziest Lutherans) ceremony that he could atttend the ceremony to support his friend but not be an attendant or take part in the prayers or hymns.

5. Is this the same church that tells women to be submissive
to their husbands - the way Bachmann said? What a crazy, imbalanced person.

6. Well, many of the fundamentalists do that
I wouldn't be surprised if the WELS did, too.

7. Not only that, but no women priests, women are second class
citizens. Eve was 'created' from Adam's rib because she's not equal (that would have been a head bone) and not a slave (that would have been a foot bone), but to be protected, under his arm.

That is LITERALLY what a fundie pastor told me in 7th grade. That church, Lutheran Missouri Synod, is LESS right wing than the Wisconsin wack jobs. Girls weren't allowed to light the candles in church, couldn't pass collection plates, and were made to wear hats into church as late as the 1970s.

3. I just hope all those Catholics in Sterns and Benton Counties
see this letter.

BTW, did you see the full page ad in Wednesday's paper that was taken out by Catholic Answers Action from San Diego (www.ccation.com) and the Catholic Defense League which based in St Paul, but says in the ad it has no formal afflilation with the Archdiocese (cdlmn.org)?

It was headlined "Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics". It went over their 5 "non-negotiable" issues (abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, human cloning and Gay marriage). What they call "lesser issues" may only be considered if the candidates you're considering have the same positions on the non-negotiable ones. Apparently, an illegal war in Iraq, the John Paul II opposed - and told Bush he would go without God if he went into Iraq, would be a lesser issue.

I think I'll have to see if either of their websites have a way to contact them and ask what I should do when there is a candidate that is certainly right on their issues, but belongs to a church that says the papacy is the antichrist. Might be fun.

4. Yes I did
With out luck, Catholics in the Sixth District will choose the "lesser of two evils" - Patty Wetterling.
