A Better America: Hold Elections Every Month!
I had fun composing this satirical Letter to the Editors. I've sent it to the Chicago Tribune and a couple papers here in Northwest Indiana--the Blue corner of a Red state--but don't know if they'll use it. Feel free to cannibalize all or parts of it for your own last-minute LTEs, phone-banking, or canvassing. (It could easily go without its final paragraph, although that's the "call to action.")

I decided not to underscore the logical extrapolation that if the Repulsives had done earlier all the stuff they've done lately, we might've had a half-decent government, and they wouldn't be running so scared right now. Better writers than I could probably make that point nicely.

Let's Hold Elections Every Month!

Some magical things have happened in the past few weeks! Gas prices suddenly fell. Mr. Bush suddenly retreated from his bullheaded “Stay the course” policy about Iraq. We've suddenly stopped hearing scare-talk about “terrorists” hiding under our beds. After six years as President, the former Governor of Texas(!) suddenly discovered that illegal immigrants sometimes sneak across the border. And the administration's Attorney General suddenly managed to locate 11,000 of the nation's most dangerous robbers, rapists, child molesters, and murderers (although it took ABC News to find a pervert who'd been hiding in Congress).

Apparently, all we have to do to get a little action out of our “Do-Nothing Congress” and our “Do-Nothing-Right President” is to hold an election! So...why not do it every month? Then we might always have cheap gas, a sensible foreign policy, more attention to real "homeland" issues like health care, some controls on illegal aliens, and fewer criminals on our streets!

But wait! Congress and the President are supposed to be working on stuff like that all year round, aren't they? Hmm, maybe all we really need is one election. We just have to use it to elect people who will actually earn their pay for a change!
