Democratic Party Poll: Capito (R) 47% Callaghan (D) 43% (WV-02)
This is great news! Democratic challenger Mike Callaghan was never supposed to have a chance against imcumbent Republican Shelley Moore Capito. This is one of those relatively overlooked House races that we could win.

BIGGEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Callaghan Surging in WV-02
Fri Oct 27, 2006

Democratic challenger Mike Callaghan has closed to a four-point deficit against the GOP incumbent Shelley Moore Capito among the most likely voters in a soon-to-be-released poll conducted for the WV State Democratic Party.

Consider this takeover opportunity the best chance to get the biggest bang for your buck. West Virginia media rates are dirt cheap. A $20 contribution will buy a 30-second spot on a cable system. A $1000 contribution buys 55 radio spots on the highest rated station in the district.

Despite being outspent 50-to-1 on campaign advertising, Mike Callaghan is snapping at the Queen of Corruption's heels because of his energetic grassroots campaign. That's why Callaghan-Capito has been added to the DCCC's

OK, numbers-crunching OCD folks, here's what the poll ( a statewide dip oversampled to give crunchable numbers in each of the 3 Congressional districts) said among the most likely voters (defined as those who rated their interest in voting at 7 or above on a ten point scale) among this sampling of 402 registered voters in WV's Second District:

Capito 47
Callagahn 43
Und/Ref 10

5.49% margin of error

Apparently this poll has not been officially released by the Democratic party.

Callaghan joins elite Democratic list
Capito opponent’s funding jumps
November 02, 2006

Democratic congressional candidate Mike Callaghan’s campaign believes it is surging with less than a week to go before Election Day.

<snip>

The state Democratic Party donated $78,000 to Callaghan’s campaign Tuesday, in an effort to defeat three-term Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito for the state’s 2nd Congressional District seat.

"Fundraising is going incredible at this point," said Callaghan spokesman Mark Imbrogno. "We’ve received over $100,000 this week."

The influx of cash has reinvigorated Callaghan’s effort. "We’re up on the air in the Panhandle now and ," Imbrogno said.

<snip>

Callaghan’s supporters say one reason they have been recognized by the Democratic committee as a viable campaign is a recent state Democratic Party poll that shows Callaghan gaining on Capito. State party leaders have declined to release the poll numbers without the Callaghan campaign’s permission.

2. West Virginia is a state very important to the nation's future
---- West Virginia may already lay claim to being possibly the "purest" democratic-controlled state, in terms of congress, senate, governor and state legislature,.. (yet Bush carried the state).. Nevertheless, confronting and opposing Bush's self-annointed distatorial powers over martial law, national guard, habeas corpus, domestic spying, etc,.. will inevitably require that opposition to take shape and be wielded from the state level,... and grow from there. WV is one of our strongest candidates for state-level resistance and opposition to the unconstitutional usurpation of power by the Bush junta.
