What's the flip-side of those new DeWine ads attacking Brown? |
|
The DeWine campaign has some former drug undercover agent stating that she busted a Brown staffer for buying drugs during Brown's days as Ohio Sec. of State. She goes on to say that Brown not only retained her, but promoted her and gave her a raise.
In my experience, there is probably some nugget of truth buried somewhere in the ad, but it was blown way out of proportion to make a sensational campaign ad.
Anyone have the scoop on the ad?
Thanks in advance.

1. IIRC, that attack ad was covered by Russert..... |
|
who asked if DeWine wasn't ashamed or embarrassed by it.
It stemmed from an incident 20 plus years ago in which no charges were filed for anyone. DeWine couldn't even name the staffer or the particulars.
Russert nailed him.

2. Initially, I questioned the relevancy of the investigation |
|
since it was back in the 1980s, but still, I was curious on how serious the alleged drug charges were.
If you want to dig stuff up on DeWine from that era, go back to his days as a member of the U.S. House, on the committee holding the hearings on Iran Contra. What I remember most from DeWine was the camera focusing on him and he was dozing off, not cognizant of the hearings.

3. Investigated by a Republican prosecutor, nothing to it |

at Sherrod's request. No charges were ever filed, there was nothing to it.
Sherrod was up for re-election at the time and he was opposed by our current illustrious governor, Bob Taft.
Back then, it was a typical GOP smear campaign, launched during the campaign. They used phony drug allegations because Sherrod was the youngest Secy of State in Ohio history and the GOP liked to refer to him as a "hippie" with all the connotations that came with the label.
On edit: I didn't live in Ohio at the time, but this is what I've been able to find out from news coverage on the subject.

4. If no charges were filed, then it was a bad bust. |
|
This was in the zero tolerance 80s. Today, given number of Republicans trying to get out of trouble by saying they're drug addicts, it's a little silly to make a case against Brown based on the fact that one member of his staff 20 years ago used drugs. It smells a bit irrelevant and I'm surprised DeWine's handlers would let him carry the water on this transparently lame crap.

By the way, your DU handle is an anagram for "Bush Toll."
I love anagrams.

what this "undercover agent" is doing coming out on a political ad some 20 years later with this information if she's truly some sort of real law enforcement.
