Wow, now that's some serious cynical garbage from Hayworth -- the Harry Mitchell campaign goes through it...

HAYWORTH DELIBERATELY MISLEADS ON HIS SUPPORT OF STEM CELL RESEARCH

After Calling Stem Cell Advocates ‘Sleazy,’ Hayworth Attempts to Become One

TEMPE – With his own internal polls show him losing ground to Harry Mitchell, J.D. Hayworth is desperately clamoring for votes by falsely telling voters that he supports stem cell research. (Source: Wall Street Journal, Nov. 3, 2006)

Ironically, just two years ago, Hayworth said stem cell advocates were offering “false hope in a scheme to win votes” and that doing so “is just about as sleazy as it gets.” (Source: CNN’s Crossfire, Oct. 13, 2004)

In Hayworth’s latest campaign mailing, the struggling 12-year incumbent shamelessly tells voters, “Stem cell research offers the possibility of treatment to millions suffering from diseases and injuries. I have a reputation for speaking out.”

Hayworth has, in fact, “spoken out” on stem cell research – in opposition to it.

The day before he called stem cell research advocates “sleazy,” Hayworth made his position clear, telling MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, “I don't believe that federal funding right now should go to stem cell research.” (Source: MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Mathews,” 10/12/04)

Hayworth’s over-the-top rhetoric on stem cell research matches his equally disturbing record opposing stem cell research in Congress.

In 2005, the White House Bulletin reported that Hayworth was “leading the charge” to block a vote on legislation to remove President Bush’s restrictions on stem cell research. (Source: White House Bulletin, May 18, 2005)

When Hayworth’s efforts to kill the legislation failed, he voted against the bill. (Source: HR 810, CQ #204, May 24, 2005)

And when that bipartisan bill passed, Hayworth voted against stem cell research yet again by rubber-stamping President Bush’s veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. With Hayworth’s loyal support of the President’s anti-stem cell research policies, an attempt to override the President’s veto was defeated 235-193. (Source: HR 810, CQ #388, 7/19/06)

“Embryonic stem cell research and the hope for cures are important to so many people,” said Mitchell campaign spokesman Seth Scott. “J.D. Hayworth’s deliberate misleading about his position on this issue is a slap in the face to every person hoping for a cure.”

A new SurveyUSA poll, released Wednesday shows Mitchell with 48 percent of the vote, and Hayworth with 46 percent. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Hayworth’s own internal polls show him trailing Mitchell by three points. (Source: SurveyUSA, Nov. 1, 2006; Wall Street Journal, Nov. 3, 2006)

The SurveyUSA poll is the first independent poll released since The Arizona Republic endorsed Mitchell's candidacy, describing him as a "consensus-builder" who "offers a better future" for Arizona than Hayworth.

The Republic, which has endorsed Hayworth in each of his six previous campaigns, described Hayworth as "a bully" and " an angry demagogue who has shamelessly and divisively exploited the immigration issue." (Source: "Mitchell over the bully," The Arizona Republic, Oct. 27, 2006)
