Labor's Minimum Wage Campaigns Are Energizing Voters - 11/03/06

By Doug Cunningham

Campaigns to raise state minimum wages are underway in seventeen states. Initiatives to raise the minimum wage are on ballots in Ohio, Arizona, Missouri, Colorado, Nevada and Montana. Labor organizers believe these initiatives will drive more Democratic voters to the polls. Rebekah Friend is President of the Arizona AFL-CIO.

: “We are talking to union members, we are working with community organizations that are out talking to communities. We are out in force. We expect to increase the voter turnout based on this issue."

Randy Kiser directs Labor 2006 in Missouri where a massive effort is underway by labor and allied groups to get out the vote and to win a minimum wage increase.

: "Our folks are excited and our folks are motivated. And we think we're going to have a huge turnout. We have a huge portion of our membership, one of the largest in the country, that are supporting our endorsed candidates. So we see some real excitement building."

1. Fantastic Idea!
Sooner or later I thought that this was going to come down to the states. Might have better luck too! ;)

2. Talk to people about making more money
and they will listen. Organized Labor is talking and people are listening.

3. If Diebold doesn't G.O.T.V., and the Democrats actually win both
Houses of Congress, they better do something about Electronic Voting before 2008. The minimum wage
issue should be another top priority. Fixing election problems is the most important thing, but I'm
confident that Democrats can do two things at the same time.

The nightmare ends Tuesday... I hope.
