November 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The date is also the first day of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The 2006 theme, “Advance Human Rights—End Violence Against Women,” focuses on celebrating activists who have made the campaign a success and honoring women human rights defenders who have suffered intimidation, violence or sacrificed lives for their activism.

The Teamsters believe that violence against women is reprehensible. Until the elimination of this scourge, there will be no equality or justice for anyone. Domestic violence can cause homelessness, missed workdays, lost wages and higher demand for mental and medical health care.

The labor movement has always fought those who try to use violence as a way to take away one’s voice in the workplace, society and politics. Every person has a right to a life free of violence. This stands as a human rights issue where the entire community must take responsibility.

Over the next 16 days, individuals and groups from around the world will participate in numerous initiatives, both large and small, to call for a stop of all forms of violence against women. Examples of how people are getting involved include:

Raising awareness at the local, national and international levels;

Providing a forum for dialogue;
*

Strengthening supportive resources;
*

Linking local and global work;
*

Sharing strategies to end violence;
*

Holding governments accountable; and
*

Demonstrating solidarity.

All Teamsters are encouraged to take part in activities occurring in their areas that will demand an end to gender-based violence.
