1. I bet he's sorry he piled on Kerry now
That was a big oops as far as i'm concerned. I'm sure he thought it would help him but he's been sliding back ever since.

3. I beg to differ. I'm sorry to say that him coming out strongly against Kerry's comments
helped lend credibility to his claims of "moderation" and independence. It was the right thing to do politically, at least.

16. It wasn't really that strong
All he said was Kerry should apologize which Kerry only apologized for messing up the joke and if it hurt anyone's feelings. Ford quickly went towards Iraq after making the statement and that the republicans and Bush should apologize too.

17. RIght. But he was the first Dem. out the gate asking Kerry to apologize.
He caught much hell here for doing that at the time but it was the rigth thing to do policially and he did frame it nicely, in terms of turning the focus away from the botched joke and back onto Chimpy's failed Iraq policy.

4. That is not the reason he is down
In my view it is more racial from the rural areas in Tennessee

especially after the RNC commercial associating him with a blond white woman

If the urban areas vote in numbers, this may surprise everyone

25. Ford
They have stated that some of the urban areas have had high
turn out. This is good for Ford. The democrats so far have
a higher turn out percentage than the GOP

In my eyes anyway. Bad political move... never, ever play the GOP game. Always stand with your Dems.

10. Oh good God. If Ford loses it is because there are so many right wingers in TN
not because he criticized Kerry. TN is not MA.

12. I tend to agree. But McCain's personal attack on Kerry was unforgivable
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 12:14 PM by Zambero
The racist ad the GOP ran against Ford bothered me even more, and I hope he can somehow ride the wave come Tuesday although it looks like an uphill climb. Ford definitely overcompensated in his criticism of Kerry and no doubt a lot of progressive voters took offense. John McCain was MUCH worse in his criticism, milking it for all it was worth on Fox News last night by echoing the Hannity party line of "That was no joke, that's what he said and he was being personally disrespectful of the troops, blah blah". I heard a talking head comment this morning that whatever integrity McCain once had is pretty much gone, because of his betrayal of a fellow veteran to gain right wing political points. Here's acopy of the letter I sent to his web site:

Dear Senator McCain,
As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict and past supporter of your 2000 Presidential campaign, I was stunned to witness your betrayal of fellow veteran Sen. John Kerry on Fox News. You know full well that Kerry's recent campaign remarks regarding Iraq in California have been taken way out of context, and yet you have chosen to take the "Swift-Boating" approach to pile on and trash his integrity for some perceived political gain. Perhaps whatever smear tactics brought down Max Cleland a few years ago is how the GOP intends to operate from now on? At one time I had great respect for you as a man of unquestioned integrity, but that is completely gone. You are by all appearances no more a "uniter" than the current failed commander-in-chief. Perhaps Senator Kerry can see fit to forgive your self-serving backstabbing comments. I know I never will.

Respectfully,
Steven Tanner

2. He's closed in a little more
He went up two points from the last Rasmussen poll, which is a good sign. Democratic turnout for early voting was really good and turnout should be high on election day.

22. Yes, and yes, the location is highly skewed. Look at the racial make-up
of the respondents with most the respondents in E. TN and I got a different perspective on this poll.

21. That seems like a really low number for Western Tennessee
That's where a lot of Ford's base is. If he can turn out his base in numbers, I think he wins.

18. I do not feel Ford can win in Tennessee...
I'm sorry to say that. I simply do not feel that a black man can ever be elected in Tennesse or even most (truly, i.e., culturally) Southern States.

As far as I'm concerned we need to really pray and keep our fingers crossed (not to mention work our assess off) for Montana, Missouri, and Rhode Island (damn it's too bad Chafee is a Republican, he's really rather a decent guy).

Ford can win TN if he gets his base out. He just needs to
make sure his base gets out.

If somebody has a majority two days out, that somebody is gonna win. Nice hoping, though. Ford loses by 3-4%, at best.
