Tester Sweeps All Major Newspaper Endorsements

Tester Sweeps All Major Newspaper Endorsements

With today’s endorsements from the Helena Independent Record and the Bozeman Daily Chronicle (link not yet available), Big Sandy farmer Jon Tester has received support for his U.S. Senate bid from all major newspapers in Montana.

In the last week Tester received endorsements from the Great Falls Tribune, Butte’s Montana Standard, and the Billings Gazette, Montana’s largest newspaper.

Today’s endorsement from Bozeman Daily Chronicle praises Tester’s plans to address Montana’s “rock-bottom wages,” develop rural communities, prioritize education and “to take an honest look at the status of the war in Iraq.”

The Daily Chronicle says Sen. Conrad Burns experience in Washington is “not enough.”

“(Burns’) inability to censor himself–as evidenced by his vocal outbursts against wildland firefighters, flight attendants, Arabs, African-Americans and even cab drivers–never seems to embarrass him as much as it does the rest of us,” the paper writes.

The endorsement from the Helena Independent Record says, “It seems clear that Montana and Congress need a strong dose of fresh air, and Tester is just the ticket.”

The paper also suggests Sen. Burns’ experience in Congress is a possible detriment to Montana.

“Much has been made of Burns’ seniority in the Senate, but that advantage would lessen considerably in the event that Democrats end up in control of one or both houses of Congress, a real possibility,” the Independent Record writes. “Besides, seniority is an issue that can only be postponed, never put to rest.”

Tester has also committed to being part of “a solution rather than a continuation of the status quo,” the paper writes. Tester will bring change, honesty and integrity to Washington, and he will fight for tax cuts that benefit middle class families.

1. Great news. I love Tester! We need him to win...
not only for a dem majority but because he's a dynamic political figure whose voice needs to be heard, on a national level.

2. About the Chronicle and the Missoulian
The owner of the Bozeman Chronicle is a right-wing nutter. I thought that Burns would almost certainly be endorsed, as the paper endorsed Bush and Bob Brown (GOP candidate for governor) in 2004. The Chronicle's opinions page used to be accessible on the internet, but the owner of the paper decided to ruin any and all web content make the online opinions page subscription only. So... unfortunately, it will be inaccessible.

The only major newspaper not on the above list is the Missoulian, which has not endorsed any candidate for Senate yet. Seeing as the date is extremely late, I doubt they will.

13. Pre-Racicot
I didn't notice much 'hate'. We had two Dem Senators, a Dem Congressman, and a Dem Governor. Then again, I don't think I would have ever seen the kind of hit piece against Olbermann that the Interlake had today either. If the Missoulian 'hates' Democrats, it's something that has happened in the last 10 or so years. Too many anal-retentive Orange County Republicans, that's what happened.

3. This is a HUGE help
There are people I know that cut out the newspaper endorsements and bring them into the voting booth. In a state as small as Montana every vote counts.

(he's a state senator)

But ya, I agree, he's going to win on Tuesday, and I think everyone knows it.

15. Montana will join Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, and West Virginia...
....as one of only five states with both houses of the state legislature, the governor, and both senate seats being held by Democrats.
