Democrats were growing increasingly confident last night that they could seize back control of both houses of Congress when America votes tomorrow.
As Republicans insisted that their superior talent for rallying their supporters to turn out to vote would stave off defeat, opinion polls suggested that the Democrats could achieve their goals in the mid-term elections, seen by many as a referendum on the Bush presidency.

Senator Chuck Schumer, overseeing Democratic efforts to win the Senate, said his party was poised for victory, primarily because of Iraq. "Right now, the American people are very unhappy with Iraq," he said.

Democrats have voter intensity on their side with their supporters angry with Mr Bush, whose popularity ratings hover around 40 per cent, while many Republicans are demoralised. But the Republicans have a superior "get out the vote" machine, a key factor in Mr Bush's defeat of Senator John Kerry in the 2004 presidential elections. This could give some of its candidates the two or three percentage-point boost they need to overcome deficits.
