Propositions weighing down the ballots=voter suppression?
There's something like 14 on my ballot, some even compete with each other--plus we pick Superior Court judges (I don't even want to count them).

This is going to cause enormous lines tomorrow and it occurs to me this may be intentional.

I've always resented props because I think they are the state legislator's job, but now I'm thinking this is all a devious design.

So I'm curious--is your ballot loaded with propositions? If you think it is, what state, if you don't mind?

2. Maybe you'll be lucky & most people will blow off the chance to participate
in democracy because they dislike voting on propositions and judges, like you. Then your line will be shorter.

3. You must live in California
I have the same problem and I think like you do--it's the state legislature's job to make laws!! I am also very sick and tired of voting down the proposition about minors having to notify their parents about an abortion. I swear this has been on the ballot at least 3 times in the past 10 years.

I hadn't thought about it, but yes, it could be a form of voter suppression. To do it right, one really must study them as if for a test to make an informed decision. Most people don't bother. The propositions pass based on the smarmy ads that are run, so once again, money talks.

4. I'm not sure...
I think it could work both ways depending on the state one lives in and the types of initiatives on the ballot. Here in California, there are a number of propositions which are certainly appealing to progressives. It may actually help votor turnout rather than result in voter suppression, for progressives at least. The same can probably be said of the reverse, i.e. higher voter turnout for conservatives in states with more conservative ballot measures. This is probably one of those "your mileage may vary" situations and I don't really think it is a subversive attempt at voter suppression.

5. You are probably correct, but I do wonder about it creating
tremendous lines at the polls.

At least 2 of our props will definitely get progressives out to vote.

I'm kind of torn on the issue, relly. I think it is the state legie's job, but if they won't do it, I figure we must.

I'm in AZ, fwiw. I know you all in Cali have more than we do.

They did away with straight ticket voting in Missouri.
AND we have
4 State and federal offices up for election
Presiding county commisioner
2 Circuit ct. judges
We have 5 propositions
A judicial ballot> reject or keep 3 SC \ Appeals court judges
And circuit court judges up for election along with a bunch of county office elections.

It could be much worse there are 12!! other candidates running unopposed.

7. Illinois was supposed to have an advisory proposition...
that the hatemongering bigots wanted. Whether the residents of Illinois desired to have an amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot in 2008. Fortunately, because of widespread signature fraud, that will NOT be on the ballot tomorrow.
