Shared Republican Values
Personally, I think a lot of Democrat vs. Republican conflict is unnecessary. There's no reason why the two groups shouldn't get along, at least well enough to settle their differences like grown-ups -- and I think burden is going to be ours to extend the olive branch to the Republicans. Because when you get right down to it, we Democrats do share a lot of Republican values.

For instance:

Republicans think tax breaks are good.

Democrats agree! We just think that tax breaks which overwhelmingly favor the uber-rich at the expense of the lower and middle classes who really NEED the tax breaks are not AS good.

Republicans think that killing the terrorists is good.

Democrats agree -- so much so that, had we been in office, we would have gone after those who perpetrated the dastardly attacks on America, and given a somewhat lesser priority to those who didn't! We just think that doing so by creating a situation which results in a net INCREASE in the number of trained terrorists in the world is not AS good.

Republicans think that giving abundant rights and freedoms to Christians is good.

Democrats agree -- so much so that we think those same rights should be given to non-Christians as well!

Republicans think that encouraging moral values is good.

Democrats agree! We just think that encouraging a strictly fundamentalist Chrisitan viewpoint of moral values subscribed to by less than half of Americans, instead of moral values to which all Americans can agree, is not AS good.

Republicans think that encouraging personal responsibility is good.

Democrats agree -- so much so that we think that government should encourage it for EVERYONE, including Republican politicians and journalists! We just think that encouraging it by pretending that misfortune only befalls the irresponsible is not AS good.

Republicans think that free markets are good.

Democrats agree! We just think that markets which are so free that companies are allowed to KILL people to increase their profit margin are not AS good.

You probably get the point. So c'mon, folks, let's take a few moments this Election eve and work on resolving our differences peacefully! Who else can name some values that we share with Republicans?

(Incidentally, as I was typing this post up, I got a call from a guy who used to be President of the United States. He wanted me to vote for Mike Hatch. Anyone else who lives in Minnesota, I think he wants you to do the same.)
