Former President Bill Clinton Makes Surprise Appearance at Miami Fund-Raiser for National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

WASHINGTON - November 6 - Former President Bill Clinton made a surprise appearance at Saturday’s 10th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner, a benefit for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force , where he wowed the 650-plus-crowd. Clinton, who was in South Florida to campaign for Democratic candidates, arrived at the event around 8 p.m., where he proceeded to greet NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, one of the evening’s honorees, and then shake hands with numerous attendees.

Big Dog's hypocrisy is only dwarfed by Ted Haggard's.

Clinton betrayed LGBTs and made our collective lives harder. Thanks, Bill, but no thanks!

11. Urban legend among your tribe and NOT TRUE
It was always Kerry's POV. Here he is recommending same for the Mass platform:

Democrats' platform shouldn't back gay marriage, Kerry says
Boston Globe

By Rick Klein, Globe Staff | May 6, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. -- US Senator John F. Kerry said yesterday that he believes it's a mistake for the Massachusetts Democratic Party to include a plank in its official platform in support of same-sex marriage, saying that such a statement does not conform with the broad views of party members.

Kerry, who opposes same-sex marriage but supports civil unions, said in an interview with the Globe that he would prefer that the party not mention gay marriage in its platform, because Democrats continue to disagree on how to handle the issue.

''I'm opposed to it being in a platform. I think it's a mistake," Kerry said shortly after hosting a forum on his universal children's healthcare bill in Baton Rouge. ''I think it's the wrong thing, and I'm not sure it reflects the broad view of the Democratic Party in our state."

Some analysts believe that the same-sex marriage issue contributed to Kerry's loss to President Bush in last year's presidential campaign. Kerry's position puts him at odds with the state Democratic Party chairman and his fellow Bay State senator, Edward M. Kennedy, who is scheduled to address the party convention next weekend.

21. Clinton did tell Kerry to stick it to LGBTs
Dennis Kucinich was the only 2004 Presidential candidate to embrace full civil rights for LGBTs, including marriage rights.

I supported and voted for Kucinich in Democratic primary!

26. Don't think for a second that we defend gay Republicans who voted
for Bush.

Aligning themselves with a party that would criminalize homosexuality if it could is unspeakable and then voting for Bush??!??

That's unforgivable.

The only people worse than Republicans are Gay Republicans.

Clinton is a good person, but he needs to apologize.

I need to hear that.

19. Bill is more interested in satisfying his ravenous hetero impulses
than he is in granting LGBTs a modicum of dignity by insisting on equal rights, including the right to marry.

Lucky for us, Hillary Clinton was quoted as saying that she is "evolving" on same sex marriage, to a small LGBT group behind closed doors. I can't hardly wait for Hillary's "evolution" to come to fruition, perhaps in time to welcome the 22nd century!

28. You don't think gay people have the right to be bitter that a
Democratic President signed into law what will go down as two of the most devastating laws in gay civil rights history?

I would never turn my back on any minority group concerning equal rights, no matter how bitter they might be.

Minorities have a right to be bitter. Good grief.

but acting out in rage certainly does not help the cause. Also the selective grace here at DU reeks. Blaming BC for Kerry's gay issues platform is BS perpetuated by a few when a plethora of evidence that that is and has always been his own POV is conveniently ignored.

Secondly, it is no secret it is age-old Rovian strategy to put Dems between a rock and a hard place before an election. DOMA was put before Clinton before the 1996 election, and Homeland Security and the Iraq War before Congress in 2002. Hell yes it would have been nice if they all had the balls to do the right thing, but to selectively excuse some and not others is just bullshit, and that hypocrisy reeks.

I do volunteer hospice work in the Castro here in SF and the people I serve are wonderful, uplifting, delightful people that are so far removed from the nastiness spewed by some here at DU, and it is that disparity of behavior I am commenting on. I would move heaven and earth if I could for the people I serve in SF. Some of the people here at DU, not so much.

29. Did you know that the language of the anti "gay marriage" amendment
never mentions "gay?" The amendment in Indiana uses similar language to other amendments introduced in other states. It explicitly refers to "unmarried couples."

All of the self-absorbed and self-satisfied heteros are as much a target of the Religious Right as LGBTs are.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

37. right
Inflammatory, exaggerated rhetoric really augments a cause and draws people in.

I would venture to guess activists such as MLK and Rosa Parks just might not see that strategy as productive, and I can assure many gay activists agree.

33. Except...
He didn't outlaw gays from being married. DOMA was a weak document that made it unrequired to recognize a same-sex marriage from another state. It is legally insignificant.

34. It's not legally insignificant for gay people married in
Massachusetts.

When they travel to another state, they are no longer recognized as being married.

Therefore, DOMA indirectly (or directly, depending on how you view it) does outlaw gays from being married.

And if it's so legally insignificant, why do you think so many states now have DOMA laws?
